Snakehead


Knowing the love of many on the board for nasty toothy critters, I thought you might
be interested in a trip a friend and I took for snakehead yesterday.   We missed one
that blew up on a hollow frog from underneath a grass mat, a big fish, and missed another
one that chased a chatter bait nipping at the tail without taking (sort of like a steelhead
chasing a wooly bugger).  Finally, in muddier water we caught this guy who weighed
in at 11 pounds plus and measured just over 31 inches.  Strike was interesting; didn't
hit particularly hard, and once it had the lure (another chatter bait) it began backing
away.  Can't recall another fish that does that.  Once I got it coming forward it came
pretty easily to boat where it thrashed around a bit until netted.  Thought it would
put up a better fight, but still cool to catch.  More pics here if you are interested:

    I heard that was at the mouth of Elk Creek and had 30 smolts in its belly...WF

    Mikas--We heard that they are a real delicacy, sort of like a burpit I guess.  So we did eat it and it was a good as they say it is.  Firm meat, sort of like a swordfish steak.

    Slick--I thought you might like that.  It was a lot of casting for that one fish, but we were catching some nice largemouth on the side that kept it interesting.  Apparently one of the most effective ways to "catch" a snakehead is with a bow and arrow.  They do it at night with spotlights, shooting them when they come up to breath air.  I think you could probably hook them with cleos just as well...

    The fish was caught at the mouth of Broad Creek, a tributary of the Potomac just south of DC.  Interestingly, one of the other fish we caught (on crankbaits) were jumbo perch.  I guess I always thought of them as a cold water fish, so I was surprised to find them in the tidal Potomac.  We could see schools of 20 or 30 of them swimming in the clear water.

    awesome, glad you removed it

     It's an excellent idea removing it whether it be harvested for food or killed outright and it's encouraged by various states' Fish Commissions. If enough people did it, it might make a difference.
     On a similiar note, it's unfortunate the Carp-A-Thon no longer exists at Pyme. It probably would have made a positive impact on the lakes' ecology if it continued. It was absolutely incredible how many pounds of carp were harvested every year. Tens of thousands of pounds is what I heard quoted from what appeared to be reliable sources. From what I understand, they were utilized for hog food.
