need some help

i will be coming up on Friday for about 3 days.  I am going to go out perch fishing and i am taking my buddy his wife and their young daughter plus my wife and 6 year old son.  Should i go out of the east ave launch or hit the nut launch.  just want the kids to have a good time.  Also i am not the best perch angler so what size weight should i use below my perch rigs.  I think that i usually go to heavy lol.  Any advice would be great thanks

I'm partial to walnut, but the EPSFA tourney is this weekend so it may be busy. I always use 1 oz on my perch rigs (sabiki rigs). Good luck, I may be mup on Saturday...

1 3/4- 1 1/2 depends on waves and current.. maybe the east ave. launch in case little uns get sea sick you could come back south to some sheltered waters around the tip of the peninsula?

Last time I was up with Bulldog, he was out-fishing my baited perch rig with a naked sabiki....I made the switch. ;)

The Sabiki/Crappie rig debate is much like the braid/mono debate. Once you try the sabiki rig you won't look back...

Dont buy the Sabiki hype! I've fished along side Sabiki rigs and they did no better than my crappy rig. Weight depends on waves and current. I like to run a 3/4 - 1 1/2 oz. sinker.

I have had the exact opposite experience as Bloodyhands. The Sabiki rig with around an ounce is now my goto. Please remember a max of three hooks per rod. Most Sabiki rigs come in the package as a six hook line.
Emarld Shiners are more important than what rig you are using. If fishing gets slow try smaller Emeralds with the hook hidden. Do not be afraid to move! 100 feet can be magical.
Have been taking 3-4 10yo each trip and they are loving the program.
Let us know how you did.

Have to agree with bloodyhand. Been out a good 20 times this year and limited practically everytime(when I didn't it was usually by choice because the dinks were dominating the bite), and all on crappie rigs. Larger minnows always get cut in half and the perch don't care if they're hitting the head or tail half. Even use the minnies taken out of the perch's mouth that he ate earlier. If you're over 'em and they're biting, you'll limit in no time. Sinker size does depend on the chop, but even in calmer waters I still like to stay on the heavier side as I feel the added resistence makes it easier to feel the bite, especially lately with the soft bite thats beem going on out there. And move! And move again and again until you find 'em. I stay in one spot for 15 to 20 mins, if nothing is hitting, up comes the anchor and it's off to a new spot. As deer archer said, a difference of 100 ft. can make all the difference in the world.

When the perch are in frenzy mode, sabikis are the way to go.  I usually start with emeralds until the water is full of perch puke from ascending perch...this usually gets the other perch in the area to hit anything that shines, flutters or shimmers------->time for the sabiki.

I love the imagery! HAHAHAHAHA! I could use a day or two watching the lake fill up with perch puke. I love this site! LOL!

Tie your own rig similar to a sabiki.  Use three small drop shot hooks in a row and tie your weight on the bottom and a small spro swivel on top.  Or, tie up a rig using regular bait holder hooks and make a loop in the line with the hook on the loop and half hitch it twice to the main line.  Tie 3 hooks in a row.  You can adjust how much line you have off the main line in the loop so the minnies can have more movement.  You can add beads or other flashy stuff if you want or just use plain fluoro and go stealthy.

My first foray into perching years ago I used one of the "spreader" rigs and didn't really care for fishing with a coat hanger on the end of my line, but it did work. Then I went to the crappie rig and used it for several years and defended it against the sabiki rigs when they first hit the scene. Honestly, I think technique and experience are more important than what rig you use, but I also can tell you from experience that newbies will have better luck with the sabiki. The line you use is more important than the rig as well. It took me a while to buy into the super line deal too, but there really is no comparison to mono. You simply would not feel the soft bite in 55 fow if you used mono.

If the bite is slow, try using 1/3 of an emerald or try dead ones rather than live. Like all fishing, if it ain't workin' change it up. Some good advice on moving in the above posts, it's amazing sometimes how much difference a small move can make.

Thanks to everyone who gave me some advice.  We ended up with about 35 nice sized perch and the two kids on board reeled in everyone.
