Turtles

I recently got into catching some turtles around some local lakes in mostly SW Pa.. Unfortunately either my lines get messed with or i never get anything lol.. Are you allowed to set tutles lines in any of the State Lakes? I tried Keystone state park and loyalhanna lake I actually seen some turtles at both lakes but didnt catch any. I was gonna try possibly high point lake this weekend.. Anyone have any other idea where some might be roaming around? I was even thinking making the drive to Geneva Swamp and taking the canoe out just gotta be careful. Ed

Any body of water from a farmpond to a river will have snappers. Use plenty of stinky bait. I always used traps instead of hook. I've always had more luck. I bait with a whole dead carp. You just have to be careful that people don't steal your traps.

I've seen some in just about every lake/pond that I have fished in the past few months.  I'm guessing the hot sunny weather has them out sunning more, or just didn't pay attention as much before?  I do usually only see the smaller turtles, but saw a nice snapper at Arthur on Sunday, back in a cove.  I'd probably suggest to avoid a lake as much recreationally used as Arthur, at least the more popular areas.  I'm sure it is legal and all, but would probably feel pretty bad if you accidentally hooked a novice kayaker / paddle boarder or even more so an adventurous wade fisherman.  The kayakers seem to be back in exploring the same areas that look like good turtle spots.  A lot of them seem to be the tree hugger type, that might steal your set ups too.  In that case, accidental hooking wouldn't be all that bad of a thing...

Riverbanks are perhaps the best place to catch turtles. They are constantly prowling the slower water near the shore. They do this mostly at night. Some places along rivers are better than others. Keep in mind that any place that looks as though it would hold catfish will also be a good place to catch turtles. Slow, slack water with a muddy bottom is a good place to set. Beaver ponds, strip job ponds, swamps, and backwaters are all good places. If you can find flooded timber that is too thick for a boat, you have found the perfect place. If you want to know how to build a good trap, PM me. You can also build a natural trap with just sticks in the mud.

All i have now is 45# nylon rope with a 10/0 hook and i have been throwing the hooks out with boneless chicken and tying them off to trees. This weekend I might try to set a few down on the Mon and see what my luck is like..

hey eman. there is a season for turtles. wasnt sure if u knew that or not. try tying a milk jug to the end of the line.put your foot on the line by the jug and toss out the bait leaving the jug on shore. use a fairly long line. for some reason the jug always ends up back on sure and then u can pull the turtle in. this way they can swim while eating the bait. i use to do this about 22 years ago and always kot turtles. i know where there is sum giants. i saw 1 a couple days ago, i swear it was eating a duck.

Ed, Check the size of your hooks, they must be at least 3 1/2" long & not less than 1" space between the point & the shank of the hook. Also best to use some sort of wire leader, I made them out of elect.wire. Plus you must have a tag with your name & address & phone # on the line. I would not use the jugs unless you are on private water or you stand a good chance of someone taking them. I have some picts that I will show you someday.btw if you use traps make sure that they are above water a bit so that the turtles can breathe. They can only stay under water for a while, unless they are hibernating.  btw we used to carry a plastic re-enforced feed bag to carry the turtles home in,we used to use burlap sacks but they are a pain  & heavy when wet.Keep the  abg away from your body when walking or they will bite you from inside the bag.  lol   sam

I have seen tons of snappers at Moraine while sitting quitely in a boat on the lake, Eman. If that lake is convenient for you, I would certainly try it. Of course, snappers exist in many lakes, but I was very impressed with the amount of them that I saw there. Good Luck wherever you go!
