Where to fish the Yough closest to the city?
Can somebody point me to some spots that are not too far from town? I've only fished the Yough at Cedar Creek state park and that's a bit of a drive. On Google maps I see all kinds of parks along the Yough after Mckeesport but I just don't know whats good and has easy access to the river.

Not sure which way you would be coming but, if you are on Walnut st. There will be tigertown bbq. There is a gas station. This is just down from McDonalds. Right at the gas station, cross the little bridge. Go past the little scrap yard. You will see where people park.

Why not take your map, drive to those places and see if they are ones you'd like to fish?

Driving from the Southside, through densely populated areas to and through McKeesport to a fishing spot, is going to be about the same commute as getting on 51 and hitting the open road, after C3 area. I'd be willing to bet that Cedar Creek is maybe 5-10 minute longer commute, for a much cleaner stretch of water. There are other accesses off of 51 a bit closer to town, but again, overall time savings in that 5-10 minute range. Check out any of the towns in the area (Whitsett, Yough, Suttersville, Smithton, ect.), all have some sort of river access. The further away from town, the cleaner it is, minus a few stretches with mine issues. Not to talk down the McKeesport stretch, but you might as well just stick to the Mon, as for water quality. Side note, none would be worth it leaving the Southside from 4-6PM on a weekday, IMO.

yeah i'm going to have to agree with porktown here. i live in a regent square, and about 3 minutes from the parkway. it takes about 30 to 35 minutes to get to boston/mckeesport and that would be the closest access to the yough. it would be another 10 to 15 minutes to get to sutersville. it would probably take 45 minutes to get to cedar creek/west newton/smithton/etc. (albeit a different route). Obviously thanks to the bike trail there are plenty of places to park along the yough. i dont know if you are looking to wade/fish from the shore/boat but generally speaking the closer you get to Mckeesport the less likely you are able to wade. and i agree with pork about driving down 51 on a weekday. saw mill run boulevard is the armpit of pittsburgh. and thats saying something.

They should just widen the road, the entire stretch from the tubes to Brownsville Rd. They'd only have to knock down 10 buildings that aren't already abandoned...

You guys know that all those abandoned buildings are owned by one slumlord family, right? Brentwood and the County have tried repeatedly to get them to sell and they refuse.

Just leaving the South Side during the evening commute is a PIA. I lived off of 14th St., and would take me about 1/2 hour to get to the FBI building if I left at the wrong time. I'm pretty sure that I could have walked there just as fast. For some reason, West Carson had barely any traffic at the same time. I could make it to the Mouth of Montour (about 10 miles), in about the same time as just getting out of the South Side, going East (1.5 miles)...

I'm guessing just the Brentwood stretch, right? Which is a disgrace by all means. That area between the Overbrook Middle School and Red White and Blue Thrift isn't all that nice either. Having those crackheads walking along the road by the Honda House doesn't add to the appeal... That all said, I'd much rather drive on that road every day, than a few others around town.

Not just Brentwood, also Overbrook. I forget the realty company's name right now, but their signs are all over the place on 51, at those abandoned buildings. The signs are white, yellow and black. Two brothers inherited all that property and hate each other. So they are just letting it go to waste for the last 25 years. Pathetic. There have been several Post Gazette stories about that corridor over the years.

I just did a search on Saw Mill Run blight - Came up with the Levitske Brothers real estate. What a shame. Even the US Government is in the act too, with the old reserve center. I thought they sold that place to someone, but it looks like they still own. Talk about government waste... Although, I'm not sure how much you could get for it, with the surrounding cooridor looking so bad.

Levitske Brothers, that's them. All those properties were owned by their father, then he died. Totally a shame. Development of that corridor is completely beholden to them. They own it all.

Rowdy's is slammin'! Beef Brisket sandwich is the best I've had around Pittsburgh. Pork and ribs are great too. Never had their wings.

rowdys chicken is pretty good, and the hot dogs aren't bad. the fries are potato patch style and are very tasty. they have their own hot dog sauce but its not in the same ballpark as jims in west mifflin/duquesne.

getting hungry now, better run and heat up the leftover chicken cacciatore I have in the work fridge. Been meaning to try Rowdys one of these days since its only 10 min. from work. Maybe we should have a fisherie lunch gathering there? Who's in? skeelol, Lots of people are always fishing under the Sutersville bridge. There is a deeper hole there and ample parking for the trail. The rifles just below the bridge get hit hard by waders so I am sure they produce. I have never fished there personally but drive by it every day. You'll want to get there via Rte 51 and making a left at the newer putt putt to go through Round Hill Park. Same can be said for the launch area and shoreline under the Boston bridge.

Do try it, it's for real very good, and relatively cheap, big quantities. Too far for me at lunch on a weekday, I live over there, but work onteh other side of the city.

I'd join for a lunch get together, as long as we don't do it from mid Aug - late Sept. I usually get about 5 minutes for lunch then.

My mom used to steal the Arbys sauce bottles from the tables and put them in her purse back when I was a young'n. You know, back before people had to worry about people spitting in them and/or putting poison or LSD in them?
