Hello again.

Hello all. I figured i would try and pick your brains earlier this year and get my gear set up early. So, i am going up most likely the second week of October. I will mainly be going for the kings. A couple of questions:
1- will weekdays be a lot less crazy than the weekend?
2- what test line and leader am i looking at?
3- whats my basic set up as far as the leader, sinkers, etc.
4- and basic trategy for catching something.
I went out last Nov for Steel and had no luck except catching the bottom of the river.
Thanks for all of your help.

-Dave

it all depends on what type of fishing your going to do  1st yes the do hit so if you want to fish for them us spinning or fly gear what ever your used to using  flies (eztes) in bright colors work beads also work spinning gear 9ft or longer rod spinning reel that will hold 12 to 17 lb line at least 100yrs or MORE (depending on if you want to run after them or hope they will turn and work it into shore) enough weight to at least touch bottom (if ur not hanging up a little then put a little more weight on )fly rod 7/8 or 9 wt  floating line and a lot of backing  find pockets and keep your eyes open  good luck  maybe see you upthere

    1. that week will be very busy.. don't matter what day of the week.. It's the traditional busiest week of the season.
    2. 12 lb main line.  8>10 leader.. (I would not go heavier on main line)
    3. try using just enough weight NOT to touch bottom.. The deeper you go the more foul hookups..
    4. fish low in the river for trout instead of salmon using peach/pink/apricot egg flies.. If you really want to target salmon then find some spawners on reds AWAY from the crowds.. Pizz them off to strike..
    5. Another week or 2 later the fishing for Chrome should be spectacular.. It was last year..
    6 .Good Luck..

Columbus week I believe? It will be mobbed every day.
What HT says on the line...would add to that... tie on a size 12 BLACK swivel and then 3 FT of flora tippet.
Attach just enough AGED LEAD split from a 6" dropper attached to swivel below main line. The idea is to tick the bottom a couple times on your DRAG FREE drift. If the weight gets caught on bottom it will pull free of dropper.
The salmon will hit just about anything but color is very important, have many colors available.

Trobe, good to hear from you again. That is definitely the busiest week of the season. Weekdays dont really matter. I will add that DSR is often overlooked at that time of year and its pretty often that late runs of lake fresh kings still come in at that time and sometimes a lot of trout. If youre going to be up that whole week try to keep in touch with me through pms and i can keep you posted to save you from spending the 45 bucks to get skunked. If theyre there that time of year its well worth the 45 and the crowds are pretty low down there that time or year...

Thank you all once again for your help.  PA- as of now I am set up with 12# test and 8# leader.  Is this strong enough, if by chance I get a big one on?  Also, I have the swivels, but don't know what the dropper is, I will have to look that up.  Dime- I will def. keep in touch to find out about the DSR.  Everyone always talks about upper and lower river, all I really know if the Altmar bridge, what is that considered?  If anyone is going to be around that week and would like to show me how it's done, feel free to PM me.  Thanks again.

dtrobe,a dropper is a short piece of line tied onto the eye of the barrel swivel for the addition of weight to your rig. Before tying it on tie a small knot on one end and then tie other end to swivel, the length of dropper should be about 6 inches. The knot will hold the weight on the dropper with normal use,if the weight gets stuck on bottom you should be able to get free losing only the weight. This is not foolproof but works more than not :) 12# is plenty for main and anything from6-10# will work for tippet.A very smooth quality drag system on the reel is MOST important.
Anything past Pineville would be considered "upper river",anything below 2A would be considered "lower river",DSR would be "way low",between 2A and Pineville is the "middle".

Never had the best of equipment till the past few years-therefore not the best of drags- had to always go up a couple of pounds to avoid  break offs.
The only exception was my noodle that allowed me to use lighter stuff on Steel with only a fair reel and drag system.
When I finally got to the point of using decent longer fly rods and decent reels it made a big difference.
On top of everything else not all have the capability to go out and spend a few hundred extra on top of their "home' equipment just for one or two trips a year to SR.
Now I have several rods with decent reels as well as a passable spin outfit or two for up there. Makes a real difference.
Those much longer rods would be a real mismatch in my brushy streams at home- lol.
First coupla years  back but 35 yrs ago a friend and I used our salt water gear for Salmon- hey- they were big as the Stripers - -right !!...live and learn-----

    dt..
Good info from PA.. I'd love to have his wisdom..
Personally for salmon I'd set up right around 3rd week in sept and kick down the 45..
If not in the dough cards then work the pockets and crowds low to high.. There will be fish to be caught through out..
Week 1 & 2 in Oct will be the big "harvest" hatch (ppl) so like said expect plenty of people everyday..
If you look back through the posts from sept 2011 on (like the one I posted) the info and reports are all right there as to how the fishing was..

Is flourocarbon the same thing as leader?  If so,
    1-is clear better?
2-is the expensive color changing stuff worth the money?

    thanks.

A leader can mean a couple things depending on who is using the term. However since you are using a spin outfit the leader/tippet is the line at the end of your rig, main line, swivel, then leader/tippet.
Flouracarbon is virtually invisible to the fish in the water (so they say) and you don't need expensive color changing line.I have great success with the P-line brand flouracarbon line,it's reasonably priced. One thing you should always do when tying knots with flouracarbon is wet the knot before tighting, use some spit.

I suggest using actual tippet material in flouro for your leader.  It is more expensive, but worth it.   It is a thinner diameter than flouro of the #test and can help with picky fish especially the steel.  If you need to see where your leader starts I tie a piece of red amnesia then my tippet.
