Lake Erie and PI spotted gar are on the endangered list....I'll bet its a stiff ticket.

Ya, but, how do they taste?

Curiosity killed the cat, but for awhile I was a suspect.

Yeah, but longnose gar aren't(which are way more common than spotted).

I never tried it(and never will), but I heard their meat is like bowfin, very mushy and doesn't tasted good.

My son & I tried 1 while he was statioed in Texas with the Marines. The fish was about 50",the scales were about as big as quarters & just pushed the filet knife aside,so we used a skill saw to make a cut down the back, then pulled the skin down to the belly. Then we fileted it,talk about some big filets. We then cut them into chunks to deep fry. It wasn't bad,but I didn't see any reason to kill anymore. The local bass fishermen killed everyone they caught by breaking the bills so that the fish couldn't eat. I don't approve of making any animal suffer. It was only trying to get by,just like us. The bass boys were mad because the gar kept biting off thier plugs.   sam

No true fisherman would ever even consider doing that to any fish whether it's gar, bowfin, carp, drum, bass, walleye, whatever.  If your gonna kill or harm it put it to use(food, etc.).

And gar has been getting by longer than any other fish!  Since the dinosaurs.  They can even breath air!  Pretty cool fish

I think I will stick to the fish that won't try to eat me if I happen to end up in the water.  Now that what I would call a "River Monster".

American Indians used to use the scales of alligator gar as arrowheads. Cool sheet.
