6/13/12

Well lets get a report here in the summer.  I went up tonight from 5:30 to 9:00 looking for anything that would bite, there were TONS of small finger length fish jumping on the surface taking insects, probably salmon I would guess.    I got 6 SM  most were  pound or less, but I got 1 bigun'  that was probably 3 plus .  I fished a few places  on a particular stretch.  Here is the kicker though, I kicked over a rock and found  3  hellgramittes.  I quickly snatched them up, getting bit by one and put one on my hook.  Instantly a straight line.  15 inch brown on the end of the line.  Hit it  hard and inhaled it and  was gut hooked so I kept him for dinner tomorrow.  Also ended up catching a 9 and a 13  brown trout with them also along with 3 of the 6 SM.   My buddy got pics and is E mailing them to me so I will post up tomorrow.  1 pretty big fish and a few small ones made for a good evening for sure.

It may seem like a minor detail, but it is illegal in NYS to collect and use invertebrates (insect larvae, crustaceans, etc) from a trout stream or river for use as bait.  I know that it is legal (or it was 20 years ago when I was last down there) to collect up to 50 in PA, but not the case in NYS.  It could save you a ticket.

This was enacted after work by Art Flick to get the bill through the legislature because people were throwing old box springs into the Schoharie to capture the helgrimites for bait, and then leaving them on the banks where the mayflies and caddis that were also living on the springs just died.

It has also been illegal to use salamanders for a couple of years now. We lost one of the best brook trout baits ever when that reg went through.

Thanks Lucky I did not know that.  I "technically" did not take them from the river.  I found them balled up under some rocks in the woods when I was looking for worms  (which I ran out of).  I did not think they lived out of the water, but they were at least 50 feet from it.
My buddy did not send me a pic of the bass so maybe later.  Dime I am sure you know where I was.  Others who know the river probably know too, by the pic.  If you get stumped and really want to know just PM me.  Hey I am not keeping secrets here , but it was nice to fish with no one else in site that did not come with me.
