Tractor is broke again!!!!!!!!

As many of you know I have been working to fix the rear end of my tractor, which mushroomed into brakes, hydraulic issues. PTO problems and  major several leaks.  Well it is done as of know and seems to be somewhat leak free (all tractors leak a bit somewhere) and working.  Now I can free up some garage space for my boat.

Well I just found out that both rear calipers on the farm truck have been sticking so on to the next job.   No fishing in the future for me as that truck is what pulls the boat until I get my hitch on.

What sucks is paying the big money that a mechanic charges to do it.   I feel for ya man.   They call brakes a gravy job at most repair places as most guys can do a brake job in far less time than the flat rate they charge.   I am just glad I know how to do it.  Should cost me less than $250 for both calipers, rotors and pads and take about 2 hours to do it if everything comes off OK.  That job would be close to $700 at a garage.

I lost my brakes completely on the highway. I was luckily able to drive with caution and roll the beast in to a midas. Complete rear job with cylinders and drums came to 722 ;)

Well the freaking tractor started to make a noise tonight when I was moving some dirt.  Took the inspection cover off and did not see any thing wrong.  Messed around with A few things I thought it could be and it still made the noise.  Started it up to put it in the garage for a teardown and the noise went away, just like that.  Drove it for 1/2 and nothing.   So what to do.   I have an idea of what it might have been (stuck half in and half out of 4x4 ),  but can't reproduce the noise exactly like it was.  Probably will fill it with fluid and cross my fingers.

Calipers are on the truck so that is fixed.

Well the noise is back and worse.  I talked to my dad and we went up to the dealer today and priced out new machines.  Dealer said he would give me 9k for our machine even with the noise and we get to keep the back hoe attachment.

Hey Clint- startin to think you might get more done with a shovel and a rake considering how much time your spending fixin up that tractor.

That funny because I had to use a shovel and a rake yesterday moving dirt and I did not like it at all.

Have you tried www.springersinc.com.  My buddy who has a 270 acre working beef farm in Worcester, NY has always found quality used equipment there.  I think they have a number of locations throughout the upstate area.

Gerry, I have drove by that place on my way to my brothers a few times.  I am wanting to stay local to have the dealer support and my local dealer offered me 9k trade in for our current one even with the new noise.
HT,  getting in fire wood and snow removal along with the standard farm work need to get done so we will see what happens.  These things should last a lifetime and the one we have has been nothing but trouble since we got it.  Plus the upgrade to a syncro would be nice too.

Lotsa the farmers around me do it with a few horses. Some days I wake up to the  sound of horse hooves and metal rimmed wooden wheels passing by the house- Kinda neat.  I dont even mind the little brown tennis balls on the road out front.

Clint sucks to hear man. Was your tractor bought new? And how old is it? They should last a lifetime for sure. Have you looked in to kubota? We have an L35 with a back hoe on it. We really extend it beyond its limits as any smaller tractor does, but so far so good. Good luck with your choice...

Btw, that magazine in little lukeys "tractor house" always seems to have some good deals in it.

Well just sitting around and thought I would update this post.   We never got a new tractor, waited for 2 months and the dealer never got a new one in.   So I tore back into it in August and found a bad gear in the transfer case bought $500 in new parts and guess what.  The noise was still there.  The tractor had no noise with the  transfer case off and gears out so I knew it had something to do with that.  Long story short the $600 new transfer I bought was cast out of spec, causing the gears to mesh too deep.   It was 1/32 too short.   So a trip to NAPA and $4 in 1/32 gasket material and made a gasket as originally there was just silicone.    Noise is gone and been using it for about a month with so far so good.

The morale is even something small as 1/32 can give you fits and don't overlook stuff.   Like on the river small changes can give good results.
