what kind of worm is this?

Sorry no picture, but while out for bullgills this afternoon,I found some worms crossing a road. They were about 2-3" long, were dark red with dry tough skin, curled up into a circle when touched also very lively. Can anyone tell me what they were? Also they seemed to have a roundish head. thanks sam

Did they look like this? If so it was a millipede. I get them in the basement all of the time, and during certain times of the year, I see thousands of them crossing the bike trail by the Yough river. They are harmless to pick up, but will crap on you, they stink when smashed, and I believe they are toxic to most things that eat them.

BRob, I just got a close look at these critters & believe that they are Millipedes. I didn't notice the legs or antenae yesterday. I am going to try them for bait.Just wonder why I have never seen so many before. They were crawling around the road like tent caterpilars, like they were migrating. thanks sam

I've seen the same thing a couple of times before. A few times on the yough bike trail there were thousands of them crossing the trail for over a mile. They like damp environments, so the recent rains may have them wandering about. They get quite a bit bigger than what you described, though. I get them in the basement, and as soon as you touch them, they curl up or start slashing around. If you do use them for bait, wear gloves. They stink any time they are smashed etc.
