CERTIFIED SALTED MINNIES

I understand the need to test baitfish caught in the lake that are going to be salted and used on inland waters as to not spread the viruses associated with these minnies but does anyone know exactly how this testing is done? It can't be per minnow. Is it per boat load as they're brought in? How many do they test out of a boat load? Even if they tested say 100 minnies and all were negative, that doesn't mean that the 101st won't be infected and find it's way into a bag of "certified" minnies. I thought I read once that salting kills the virus, and if this is true, then all salted minnies whether tested or not should be safe to use in waters not associated with lake erie. And let's say we have a "clean" lot of live minnies, why then couldn't they be used in land. Or is testing a random hit and miss endeavor with the "hopes" of not spreading this virus?

I may be wrong, but... I don't think you are allowed to use any that are caught in the Erie system anywhere but Erie. The certified VHS free minnows are coming from certified distributors. You're supposed to have your receipt with you to prove where you bought you minnows.

I don't think there's an economical way to test a batch of minnows that you catch...

Sorry for being off-topic. But has anyone in the Erie area caught a fish WITH VHS?

Yea, after pulling him up from 60Ft of water and his air bag(air bladder) is deployed. That's due to the change in the ATMO. NOT VHS.

"Symptoms of VHS include hemorrhaging (bleeding), bulging eyes, bloated abdomens, anemia, pale organs, unusual bleeding found in muscle tissue and internal organs, unusual behavior, rapidly deteriorating health, and death, although some infected fish may not show any symptoms at all. Fish that survive a VHS infection will develop antibodies to the virus, temporarily protecting it from future outbreaks."

If the bulging eyes were solely from the trip from the deep, why aren't all of their eyes bulging?

Either way, they are safe to eat and most will never know if they caught one or not with the disease...

I just discussed this with a buddy of mine and he talked to a WCO and the WCO told him they don't really have the funds or time to test the fish or minnows and the "fish" that have been tested have come up negative. He also said their has not been a single fish from pa in lake Erie that tested positive for the virus. Take that how you want it but I think VHS is another EPA reg.

    Pinner,

While as of 2008 no infected fish have been reported from Penna. waters. Infected Perch & Sheepheads HAVE been taken from Ohio waters, near the Pa/Oh border.

Also the regulations in relation to this come from the US & Penna Depts of Agriculture. NOT the EPA.

bulldog, certified how??????  this goes back to my original question. who's certifying these minnies? when you go to smitties on state, they have minnies and "certified" minnies. do their cash registers ring up your receipt as "certified minnies". I think not. Bulldog, I can guarantee you, go to smitties tomorrow, and if you had to prove it in court, nobody could seperate the "certified minnies" from the regular minnies.

I have heard that it costs $20 to certify one minnow. Whether that is true or not i do not know but i belive that this certification stuff is garbage. And i like what was said about salting them. I thought that it would kill the virus also, making it impossible to spread the virus in the inland waters.

    Pike,

I am pretty sure the department of Agriculture certifies the minnow. Also at Presque Isle Angler Bait and Tackle on State St they in the past issue a receipt or a buisness card with either a stamp and a signature that proves you bought the certified bait from that shop. Also normally the bait store buys the certified bait from a supplier to my knowledge. The store does not have it certified.

the minnines come in from whatever distributor like out of Wisconsin or other places and the lot is certified. For instance when we go to Chautauqua Lake and get minnies just before the bridge, the receipt says VHS free. I have also been checked by the fish popo for the receipt there. I don't know where else locally but I know & bought at Poor Richards certified minnies in the winter time.

I 'think' I have caught smallmouth with VHS in Erie. I can't explain any other reason that a fish would bleed from it's side from between the scales.

Because I tried to snag it when it was Elk Creek spawning.

I'd love to see those tanks, post some pics or maybe a video of feeding time...

Glad to see you're sticking around...
