yes, the way i understand it is only 3 hooks in pa. the way i put them together is put 4 dummies on the out side and put a hook on a larger swim bait in the middle set back a little. i saw that's how they do it at the chesapeake bay for stripers. they say they always hit the larger back bait. i haven't used them yet but i'm going to try them at raystown lake for stripers this summer.

I would think you could fill the rig up as long as you only have three with hooks in them.

**** Sporting Goods, at least here in Baltimore, has three different umbrella rigs. I can't remember the name of the company, but one of them is $5 off, so the rig costs about $10.

I thought that I saw a 3 piece one at Gander in WM for around $15. Had no real interest in purchasing.
I have fished many lures in tandem (usually one larger and one smaller matching twistertail or shad) in the river with success. Although, mainly to add weight to the smaller jig, but works. Also have had good success at the beach with teasers (fly tied about 2'-3' above your main lure). Same concept of a school of baitfish, or larger baitfish chasing a smaller one. Worth giving a try before you buy...

Tandem rigs worked great on flounder wading Galveston Bay. First bait would be a heavy jig with a paddle tail or shrimp body trailed by a foot of fluoro leader and a kahle hook with a live mud minnow.
I'd need to haul out my surf gear to cast some of those umbrella rigs.

They look like they would be a bear to cast all day, if they cost that much it would get pretty expensive if you got snagged a lot.

my buddy has been throwing one on the Mon this spring and whacking the wipers. 3 soft plastic swimbaits with hooks and 2 without. It looks pretty good in the water.

I would be pretty sketchy about fishing one in the rivers for that very reason.
I'm betting these would not be very hard to make with some stainless wire/rod that spinners are made with. Minus the weighted head, which likely wouldn't be necessary if attaching 3 swim shad to it. Like Eyes said, you'd probably need a surf fishing rod to cast the thing. Might actually be able to make something much more suited for standard fresh water gear, that you wouldn't be jumping in the water to unhook a snag...
Anyone happen to know where to get straight pieces of stainless wire/rod? I've seen it online at tackle crafting supplies, but figure it would be much cheaper from a place like Tractor Supply, ect. I know Harbor Freight sells the coils of stainless wire, but too easy to bend.

They sell thin steel rods like that in a hobby store in monroeville. I made a smaller 3 way umbrella rig I intend to use slow trolling jigs or small cranks for crappie. Was thinkin a small deep diving crank on bottom, light jig in the middle n a minnow in the top spot. Haven't got the boat running yet this season though to try. I used heavy single strand stainless leader material

Sounds like a smorgasbord for the crappies. At least figure out what they are interested in. Doing a little internet searching, it sounds like some folks use stainless welding rods, although that seems to be for ocean lures. Not sure how thin they sell them.

Fishing saltwater, we make all the swimbaits hookless except for one which trails back further from the umbrella. They will hit the trailing swimbait majority of the time
