Grinding/clicking sound

I have a Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris Signature Series Spinning reel. If I hold it horizonally while reeling, it's very smooth and quiet (as I would expect a $100 reel to be). Whenever I start to point the rod and reel up (when jigging, for example), however, it makes pretty audible raspy clicking sound with approximately every other revolution of the handle. I can also feel the reel "clicking" very faintly. It isn't something rubbing against the inside of the spool, as it still makes the noise when the spool has been removed. It was oiled and greased with hot sauce bofore it was ever used. Only had the reel for a few days. I really don't want to excange it unless I need to, as I already have once.

Doesn't sound good, if this is the second trip back I would just return it and get something else like a Stradic. A little more money but you won't be disappointed...

so you must of taken the reel apart to grease it up, so maybe you did not put back together right. try to take it apart and make sure it's assembled properly.

It was making the noise before I maintenaced it. I was actually getting more in depth with the cleaning/lubing today, when the contents of the reel under the spool feel onto the ground. I think I put everything back where I was supposed to go. I have a bit of a photographic memory, and a parts guide. Not trying to brag, but I'd love to see another 14 year old attempt to reassamble a spinning reel.

I don't mean to be critical, but I would never tear into a reel that was less than a week old.  Most quality reels come from the factory lubed up and with the bearings packed in grease.  You should get a decent amount of service from a quality reel before a tear down becomes necessary.

If you messed anything up re-assembling the reel, it is now your problem as I doubt BPS would accept it as a return if the tampering is even slightly evident.

I would get it back together properly and send it back.

Most of the people I've talked to put hot sauce in their reels before they even take them on the water. The factory stuff only lasts for a little while, but hot sauce last practically forever. And I'm sure the reel was properly re-assembled, it acutally works a little bit better than before. Either way, it's going back. Sure it would stop actually working on some weekend fishing trip right when I really don't want it to. Think I'll get a Saurus 1000.

Think I'd leave a Shimano alone for a while, though. The stuff they come lubed with is pretty good.

I also bought a Johnny Morris series spinning reel from Bass Pro shops. It does the same thing for a few minutes after every larger fish I catch with it. It first started after catching a Walleye around 22 inches. It was only a few weeks old, but it stopped within a few casts. Last week I caught a 6lb Largemouth, and the week before, a 5.5 pound Largemouth on it. After both catches, the same thing happened, and it only lasted for a few casts. I have no idea what it is, but the reel works fine and the rod/reel combo it is part of casts like a dream with 12-15lb mono.
