just bows

Every year I buy a Vermont non-resident license , as I live on the border. Mostly I buy it for the wonderful wilderness brookie fishing which I'll start doing next month. Another reason  is some quality lakes near me that are stocked each spring from a great hatchery. Large , strong fish that jump numerous times. I went today with the tube and my favorite 2 wt. and had a field day. They ate my favorite brown/copper/ginger bugger like it was M&M's. Some of the fish jumped up to eye level. They're not steel, but they head shake and put up a respectable fight. On a 2 wt. they're lots of fun. One made it to 20".  Might be the largest bow  I get until next fall. We'll see. I also got one on a dry- first of the year- as there was a speckled dun (callibaetis) hatch. I put on a CDC parachute  Adams and got one to eat. It was very windy, so I went back to the bugger. Between the salt and smallies, I'm starting to forget about trout.   Nah......

Gerry, the strymph is gonna get greased and used for topwater smallies. I've almost got them up to the top- been using 1/0 bucktail deceivers and they've been taking about 2' below the surface. Next warm spell. Bet they'd kill the smallies on the SR. Either that or end up with a skam or atlantic...

Charlie, those are really nice bows. You mentioned that they are stocked by a great hatchery,is that a state facility? If so I only wish Penna. could stock something close to that, here most are in the 8"-12" range and would make good Striper bait.

They used to stock Kettle Creek Pa. with lunkers until they declared it a "natural fishery", yes 8" trout are natural.................those are some nice hefty bows you got there fichy!

Jack, Vermont and New York both have  programs for stocking 2 yr old fish, usually in the 15"+ range. They don't do it in every stream, but most of the larger get them. In my area, the Battenkill gets a healthy dose of 2 yr. old browns. They acclimate and survive beyond the first year, and it provides for some very nice looking 20" fish! There isn't many, but great when you get one.  New York seems to stock more browns, Vt. rainbows. Brookies are generally stocked in the mountain regions of the Adirondacks and the Greens. There are some select places where they put the brood stock  in- they can go 8lbs.  Not big by our steel standards, but when you have a 2 wt. instead of a 7 or 8 , you're in for a battle. The rainbows in the lakes are my favorite. They quickly adjust to their habitat and start feeding on insects. In a few weeks I'll be throwing sz. 20-22 midge emergers at them.

Fichy-Palomino midge is one of my favorites fished on 6X-7x tippet in the film. It's simple to tie but very effective particularly in the slower tailout section of a pool. Midge pupas on a dead drift are also very productive. Gray, green, red, black, brown, tan and sulphur yellow in sizes 18-24 and you can have a blast.

Here in Pennsyltucky they sprinkle a few 2 yr old fish in their regular stockings and sometimes get rid of the big breeders (6-10lbs),but they are are few and far between. The problem I have is there are no quality trout streams or lakes near me,I have a two hour drive to get to anything decent. The only exception to that is the Big Lehigh,I can fish some decent water there about 10 -15 miles away. So,I spend my time walking my Boxer dog and dreaming about Sept.,I just can't get excited with what I have near me.You're fortunate to have that quality water nearby so keep posting those pictures as I'm sure there are many that enjoy them.

Charlie im looking forward to that day whenever it might be. On the other hand, 20" rainbows on a 2 weight with size 22 emergers sounds like a blast. Its quite some time sinced ive fished anything smaller than a 14... one of these days im gonna brake the trend

I tried the Trico hatch a few years ago, could n't see the darn fly (26)so I set the hook when a fish rose near where I thought it was,I even hooked a few.I did n't enjoy that and the fish were tiny(5-8") native browns,so I gave that up....Bring on the Kings and Cohos!!!

Jack, if you ever run into that scenario again, there's several ways to get around using the trico spinners. Since the trout are feeding on several at a time, usually, you can use something that portrays a midge cluster. The best I know of is a Griffith's Gnat. It's  a body of  peacock herl with  a grizzly hackle palmered the length of the shank. I would use an 18 and time my drift to coincide with the rise of the fish. They generally get in a rythm for trikes.
Another choice is a black ant with a white post.   That or fish a trico spinner trailed off a parachute pattern as an indicator/locator. I just suck at fishing for steel on the SR, I do have a clue for other fish.

Its been a while as said before since my microscopic dry fly days, but when i fished trico hatches i would tie a double for two reasons...1: its common to see two following each other...sometimes male and female...meaning one black and one olive...
    2: its a heck of a lot easier seeing a 16 rather than a 22 or 24

Griffith's Gnat works anytime you have midges on the water or for the Trico hatch. Keep it drag free and you will catch fish. The other pattern that does extremely well is a Klinkhammer, represents a crippled emerger that trout key in on. Easy to see on the water with a white, pink or chartreuse post.

Pete, I can catch some, just can't get enough to compete with the other board that Retired mentions. I've had a few  great days where I landed a dozen and have been ecstatically happy, only to find out that other guys have banked 40 or 50 and hooked 70 or 80 and its ho-hum, we do this every other day. I remember you got a nice Skam, early on. That counts for about 20 in my book.  It's all relative, and has much to do with time on the water. I was on the river 30 days this past season, about 10 or 12  of those with HT. It's amazing how 2 minds can come up with solutions and places so much better than one. Some days I had the answer, alot of the  days, HT did. We file it away for the future. And then there's fish magnets like Jack you steal as much as you can from....
Hope I see you on the river next fall.

Charlie- I liken fishing to playing a round of golf. Out on the course its me against the course not me against who I'm playing with. Fishing is very much the same, it's me against the river and the fish. I couldn't care less what everyone else is doing. Wasted energy and concentration if you get caught up in what the guy next to you is doing.

And then on top of that refuse to post a picture due to "spot burning" or someone finding what color their magic bead is. I am not saying to post full scenery shots and crop it down to cut out the back drop if you want, but there are no true "secret spots" any more and if someone can pick a spot out of a few feet of back drop it's no secret to them. It's just an excuse to not post the picture.
Charlie, I still stand by my thinking that most of these guys cannot tell the difference between the bottom and a fish and if that is the case I have had 50 hook up days too.

    Clint,

I think a lot of these 50 hook up day guys are hook up the tail and hook up the vent and hook up the pectoral fin and hook up the.....

They don't sell the little signs in the tourist places for no reason: "All fishermen are liars except me and you and sometimes I'm not so sure about..."

Fichy, those are nice rainbows, cherish a spot like that. We get those in Eighth Lake up along Route 28, but the usual rate is one or two a day. But an 18" bow on a 2 wt is about as good as it gets!

    Charlie-
Went up to UFZ one PM last Summer and while rigging up back in the woods a bit had a chance to observe two guys 'fishing' on the River.
Am sure when they finished lining the carp outa the place they coulda written a nice piece about all the hookups they had.
When showing myself along the river they moved on outa sight..There were two fish laying there in a nice rift with noticeable rips on their backs.
It probably isnt the number of hookups one achieves but how they are achieved that counts to most of us.
As a relatively poor flyguy  saw many fish last Summer with no hookups. Am sure with other 'methods' one coulda had some days with multiple hookups to brag about.
Same for steel- but then there ARE folks who get the right drift with the right bait and certainly do have banner days.
Am NOT sayin everyone who hits them good is using bad manners but only that -it happens and many dont know or care about the difference
Down in the "vines" last winter there was guy at the head of a pool  who seemed hooked all the time. Then  noticed he was peering into the water with his dark glasses and lifting  the fish that moved in close to him. At least he released  them all. He coulda wrote a great article- who knows maybe he did.
Hey- only takes one to make my day-its the experience  -not the numbers.
