Very nice, especially the shad. How did you like the Deep Elem video? My buddy fished down around the Tappan Zee last Saturday and got skunked.

glad I was in the big boat today as all the Crazies were out in force.. Wind blew pretty steady and waves of boats running up and down but we held strong out there..

Some people did good on stripers and all we caught were bait ... Shad are fun and fight like heck on the ultra light but sabaki's make a nightmare in the net so I allowed my shad a quick photoless release :) ..

In tribute to a Dirt Farmer :)

We boated 9 shad.. Biggest maybe 6 lbs.. (hah, the ones I let get off..lol) to a small fighter of about 2 lbs..

now that I spilled blood, beer and guts , yup it can be called a fishing boat .. LMAO

Nice CC, can only see the "er" in the photo, is it a Parker, a Striper or something else? The Capt. I fished with last week said the Drum is a good eating fish. The shad had to be a blast on light tackle. Get ready for heavy rain, God knows we need it.

Pete.. I have no Idea about the tyre of water your fishing down there.. Is is like the hudson ? Tide, depth & width ??
Up here we do it pretty laid back and simple.. Jig some herring with a Sabki rig. Put live herring on a 4/0 with a 3 oz sliding sinker and drop over to bottom.. So simple everybody can do it..
You'll know when the Stripers are looking as the bait goes nuts..
Knowing the flats and "choke" points of feeding stripers does help

Shad and other species are mostly caught using the sabiki on an ultra light rod.. We used to just target shad with darts but thats a no-no anymore.. They will hit anything though..
Bout this time it's starting to get pretty busy out there with boats so a good sea worthy boat is nice, not a half running 1955 7.5 hp.. Still plenty of room for everyone to fish it's just the crazy boat drivers that buzz by that turns me off ..

Wish you well and if you ever want to try your luck down here I can help you with direction..
Im sure Charlie can add some intel on how to catch them in another fashion..

Oops. There are some long, slow and deep sections in PA we are looking at.Boat is a stable platform and only drafts about 8" of water but not going to run it through any rapids. Too much time and money fixing it to where it will end up.Large live bait might be a problem. Will give it a go and if it doesn't work out, the river is loaded with smallies. Will keep you posted.

Pete, I grew up  fishing the Delaware from New Hope up to the Gap. I use to shad fish and sell roe. The striper fishery didn't exist then, and really hasn't taken off until recent years. From what I understand, they love stocked trout that come in from the tribs that have them. I know one fellow that got a good striper  fishing a 10" rainbow at the mouth of the Muskenetcong in Phillipsburg. I kinda think it's illegal.  Using a big jointed Rapala isn't. They also love, and I mean love, eels- which the D has lots and lots of. They should be  available at bait shops, especially nearer the tidal sections. Fishing eels at night is a good method for stripes.  You could also try using half a small shad as chunk bait. Good luck, and post some reports. At worst, I know you'll get plenty of smallies, and that isn't a bad consolation prize..... I got quite a few smallies on shad darts.

Thanks Charlie, I knew I could count on you.We 'll talk more as I get closer.Last report I checked said shad and a few stripers in the Gap and Lambertville.Rain could help the push.Always wanted to go for shad, so this is the year. Not opposed to staying out all night. Not like I 'm driving four hours through snow.

Before it became illegal we used Hickory Shad- alive was best but dead and drifted on the bottom they still out fished eels or any other bait- No Hickory- Eels were always next best..
At night along the edges we used large Sandworms under a bober with great results too.

Tough day on the river. Poor visibility, high pressure, heavy NW wind, but HT kept the skunk off the boat. Quite a battle!

As if that wasn't enough I'm back out here in the half not running Jon boat. I'm on the windy river point for any nite bite with a fresh supply of bait waiting for a miricle.

    Update:
we went out until about 10pm last night..
    Not even a sniff..
