put a dollar bounty on gobies. when they reach 500k, i would say that would put a big dent in the population! that and they won't have to worry about the caught ones going back to the same area, breeding or winning fishing tournaments!

500K wouldn't even put a dent in the population inside the bay, let alone the lake. Not even close.

oh, i forgot to use the sarcastic font.
let's see though. 500k dead gobies, 500k gobies not breeding!
a water cannon project costing about 500k and not intended to kill the gobies. which will make the biggest dent in the population?

Which is an absolute non factor when dealing with the size of population we're discussing. The same effect your buglite has on the mosquito population.

It's not intended to "dent" the population. It's intended to temporarily REMOVE ( without environmental impact ) the population from a specific area. THAT has significantly higher odds of success, than attempting to have any major impact on the size of the population.

Go to a Chinese restaurant and ask for the gobi special.
After they hear that a few times gobi will disappear faster than pigeons in the square.

The target fish -- the round goby -- has upended the food web in Lake Erie.
"It has changed the ecology in fundamental ways," said Jim Grazio, a Great Lakes biologist for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.

it sounds to me as if the goby has already changed the environmental impact. i can't find anywhere it says "remove without environmental impact? that and the gobies will return. why not just get rid of some?

The $500,000 question -- the Environmental Protection Agency will spend that much on the cannon project and some related restoration work on the reefs -- is how long the gobies will stay away.
500k for a bounty will keep 500k away for some time!

i like the idea. $1/goby and "Lake Erie Deadliest Catch" is born. just likin'

" i can't find anywhere it says "remove without environmental impact?"

"The effect will be short-lived, however: Because no chemicals are used, water conditions will return to normal once the sound wave dissipates."

    Get the idea?

"The $500,000 question -- the Environmental Protection Agency will spend that much on the cannon project and some related restoration work on the reefs -- is how long the gobies will stay away."

Like many/most things in life, you never know unless, or until you try. And similar "repellant" techniques have been known to work with other critters. I would also suspect that the underlined represents a large percentage ( if not most ) of the 500K total being spent.

i suppose the 'underwater cannon' is like putting a fan over a line of campsights in a campground to keep those mosquitos away.  $500k to make them go somewhere else to disturb somewhere else and return when the fan quits.

This technology was already employed successfully, to drive Asian carp away from the electrical barriers while preforming maintenace on them.
