Fishing near Seton Hill
I go to Seton Hill university in Greensburg and my buddies and I are looking for some good spots primarily in Westmoreland County. We've been to Twin Lakes but there seems to be a lot of people there and have also been to Beaver Run where we got some huge bass but got chased off by a homeowner who yelled at us for trespassing. Needless to say we probably won't be going back there anytime soon. Also if anyone has any info on good places for trout spots since I know that season is creeping up on us. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Mammoth, Donegal Lake, Smithton/Cedar Creek, Indian Lake, Keystone State Park. Those are all within 30 minutes from SHU.

Anywhere on the Yough from Smithton/Cedar Creek down to Sutersville is pretty good for about anything... Including Tires and other random objects... Donegal Lake is about one of the best lake out of all listed by Traillblazer imo... Less people will bother you and there is opportunity to catch just about anything really...

You ever do any good there Sam? I've only caught small bass and panfish, and seen some smallish carp. Seems like a lot of guys do carp fish there, but I've never seen one caught.

ORIGINAL: FishinGuy Don't forget loyalhanna creek. Or the Outflows of Conemaugh and Loyalhanna both are about a 30-40 minute drive from Seton Hill and you can catch ANY thing there... haha... Also Loyalhanna Creek from the Dam downstream to the Conemaugh is open year round just have to follow normal creel limit for the time fishing. As for Conemaugh there are no stocked trout but i've seen pics of some nice fat rainbows that some how survive the lake...

do you know exactly where that is at? I'm not all that familiar with the area. My dad told me about loyalhanna, is that a lake or what exactly is it?

Well there's the stream that flows out of Lynn Run up in Rector off of Rt. 30 that flows all the way down the mountain to Latrobe then zigzags up through New Alexandria where it forms the lake which is an Army Core flood impoundment... Up off of Rt 981... It really depends on where you're driving out of and how fast you want to get there is to how I could explain to get there... Loyalhanna Creek has different regulations before it flows into the lake... Most of it is Approved Trout Waters... Other sections I believe are DHALO (Loyalhanna Creek – 1.7 miles; from SR 711 downstream to SR 2045.) The rest of it is Approved Trout... Conemaugh is just a mile or 2 off of 981 on the way to Loyalhanna... Really it depends like I said on what you're fishing for and what how fast you want to get there... If that doesn't help just PM me.

Not calling you a liar at all (in fact, I'd have loved to fish that section in this warm spell we just had), but according to all the regs' I found, the entirety of the Loyalhanna creek (save for the DHALO) is an ATW, and as such, is closed from 3/1 to the opening day of trout season. If there's an exception to this for the lower reaches, I missed it (and would love to know about it). As for Conemaugh there are no stocked trout but i've seen pics of some nice fat rainbows that some how survive the lake... A few years back, I was fishing the outflow in mid-August, and a big fat brown that I'd estimate at about 22" swam past the rock I was standing on. Didn't want anything to do with my lures, but the water can support them.

Needless to say we probably won't be going back there anytime soon. Porbably shouldn't go back being that you were tresspassing and it's illegal to fish there. With that being said try a lot of the other spots that guys have mentioned. For trout you can also try Northmoreland Lake. That hasn't been mentioned yet.

You should try Greenlick Lake and Bridgeport Reservoir, they are both located near Mt Pleasant which is about 20 min from downtown Greensburg. Both lakes have some nice size fish in them including the occasional walleye and musky. Both lakes are open year round for fishing since they are not stocked with trout.

The Conemaugh watershed does have water running into it that is stocked with trout, and they stock the Kiski river with trout, too, so it is very well possible to explain the trout below the outflow there, they are few and far between, however, they are there.

Thanks for all the input, I think we are gonna try some of the spots mentioned. Another question though, since twin is an early season lake, does that mean its closed to all fishing 4/1 to opening day, or just for trout cause we were hoping to go up Sunday.

went to Bridgeport today with a couple friends and got skunked, a few of my buddies caught sunnies, crappie and one smally...Seemed pretty dead to me though, no one that we saw was catching anything. Very nice lake though.

Not a darn thing they can do about it, at all.

I was under the impression that the rest of the creek to Saltsburg fell under the "water downstream of ATW" descriptor, and as such, was closed. There's a few spots between Monastery and the lake that I'd love to have been fishing for the past few weeks.
