Good places around Cal U

I'm a freshman at Cal U and was wondering if there are any good places to fish around the school. Anything within about 30 minutes is close enough for me. Obviously the river runs along the campus, any general areas along the Mon that are any good? I've never fished the river before but if I'm gonna be here for 4 years I think it's about time I start. I'd prefer lakes though, thats what I'm more used to. Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Wait until you hook into a big channel cat or walleye in a river. You wont prefer lakes anymore!

The river there is okay. You also have West Pike Run which runs through California. It's stocked with trout, so closed now until April 14. You can also fish the DHALO section of the stream which is open year round. It's in Daisytown. Not far from you at all. Not many good lakes around there to be honest. Or Washington County in general. A lot of man made waters with fairly poor fishing.

Go to http://www.fish.state.pa.us/ and check the "County Guides." Maps that show you all the water around you.

Thanks, I'll have to give the river a try as well as the DHALO section of West Pike Run. I guess not having many good lakes is a good reason why I've had a hard time finding a place to go.

cross creek is just outside you 30 min area but a nice lake to fish from a boat. There is plenty of shore fishing there as well.

I fish at Cross Creek when I'm home actually, I like the lake alot. I'll have to check and see just how far away it is from school. Ten mile looks like it's fairly close, I'll be sure to try that. Thanks, for the info Bdugg.

Dunlap lake right before you get to uniontown. Stocked with trout and is an awesome lake for bass.

If you don't mind spending the extra 15 minutes (it's about 45 minutes), the Yough Lake is your best option for a variety of fish.  Perch, Crappie, Walleye, Bass, etc..... Depending on time of year, one species will show up more prevelant on your hook.   Honestly your best "lake" option near cal u.

You are within a half hour of lots of spots on the youghiogheny river or 2 good tribs of the yough, jacobs creek, and sewickly creek. Great fishing in all. You should be able to find tons of info on this site about the yough. Most people wade or fish it with canoe/kayak. You can rent canoes at hazlebakers in layton or in west newton... i think it's called youghiogheny outfitters. Good luck
