Ohio STEEL!!

Did n't fish Monday because of high and muddy water caused by Sunday storms.Decided to fish a couple tribs to a larger river today and really had a blast!Arrived at dawn and moseyed up stream to a spot I know, unfortuntly three guys beat me there.Fished among them and managed to land one and lose a couple.Spent some time there and then moved to the next trib, and there I hit payday.Walked thru the woods to a great spot by a waterfall and some nice current and holding areas, and the Steel were waiting and ready to play!In three hours I probably had 30 hook ups and brought to hand about half of those, some of these fish were dime bright and really put on a display, but there was no one there to appreciate the show as I was all alone with no one within 300 yds of me :)Did n't have a camera but tomorrow I'll lug one with me and post some pictures if my daughter shows me how to do that.

True that I am jealous too. If have 5 or 6 hook up from a whole day I am in heaven. Can't imagine 30.

That's excellent, Jack. Thanks for the report. My warmwater season has started off with some good fish already, and  I'm off to Southern California for some salt fishing in a few days. I don't know if I'll get back out for the dropbacks or not, if I don't I'll look forward to seeing you next fall. I'm in for an Erie trip.

Went to same spot on Wed as Tues and did n't fare as well.I had company first thing and the idiot decided to wade where he should be fishing and scattered the fish and then started to cast to them as they were swimming for cover.Left there and explored downstream as I was never on this stream until Tues.
Turns out the rest of the stream was a series of riffles, short deep runs, and log jammed holes. But there were fish through out,and people.Managed to land about 10 and lose a few others but the size of the water restricted the fight of the fish.By mid afternoon I was cooked by the heat and quit for the day.
Thurs I went to a larger stream now that the water dropped and cleared somewhat.Fished a area that I visited a couple years ago but everything was different from high waters, and not better.Managed to go 1 for 4 in the morning, but as the sun got high the fish turned off(every day it got into the mid 80's),I think the water was too warm.
Friday went to another stream for the first time and fished some very nice water.Again first thing as the sun came up had two on and that was it!Talked to several others on about a half mile of stream and no one was hooking up.Moved to another spot and same results. The heat sent me packing early arternoon.
That's the end of this trip and if I ever figure how to post pictures I'll get some up.

Thanks Dime, I wish I did half the stuff he gets to do at his age when I was that old. My dad was no slacker when it came to taking me fishing but it was JoySee (Jersey)trout fishing, at best 10"-12" fish. Once I started going to SR in 1987 I was hooked. Took my dad up there for years until he didn't feel steady on his feet 82 now. So I now treat him to a drift boat ride in the fall for steelies before he heads south to Florida for the winter. I'm still trying to repay my parents for their support and guidance in my earlier years.

That is my sons fly patch, it holds flys you just used so they can dry out or keep them handy for changing back to again.

It is an awesome pic. love seeing folks getting out with the younger ones, and the
kids faces never fail to remind me of what it's supposed to be about...

Well I hit the Grand this morning now that the water has dropped.Nothing, nada,no one was hitting anything, dead! That warm weather and high water screwed the fishing up good,it looks like they came, spawned and left about a month early. There might be a few in the system but too few for the amount of water in the Grand.I then drove to the Rocky and it was really low and not too interesting. One thing that amazed me on the lower Rocky was the number of Emerald shiners in there, millions of them that the water was black with them, lots of food for the Smallies when they show up.
That's it for me,going to fish locally until Sept.

Around here its mostly all 'stocked trout' but they are fun with the ultra lite stuff or a lite fly rig. Tasty too. Season opens third Sat of April but its a madhouse for a week or two-  dont go till early  or mid May (AKA snake season)- crowds gone by then-specially in those brush and briar choked small places.
    Good luck 'home fishin'.
