Canada trip in July

I just booked my first trip to Canada for a week in July. I was wondering if I can get some ideas of stuff to make sure I don't forget. I've been told everything from filet knives to underwear. Also, does anyone have an opinion on what bugspray works the best? I really don't wanna get eaten alive the whole time I'm there. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

I gave up on Canada when I discovered Erie...

Bug net for your head and long sleeve shirts with tight cuffs and light gloves, those black flies will eat you alive and leave behind large red welts. If you're a tobacco user, take your supply with you it's much more expensive up there...

I'll be sure to bring a net and long sleeves. The owner of the lodge said that the summer heat eventually kills the bugs. Hopefully alot of them will be dead by the time we get up there. Has anybody ever tried Thermacells? I see them on tv but never used them. I was hoping to see if they work for anybody before buying one.

I would say the lodge owner is full of spit, unless he is talking about blackflies as they should be gone by the time of your trip.  We used to go to Quebec in late July/early August and the skeeters were always bad. During the day the horseflies could also be pretty bad.  I have no experience with the Thermacells, but I can say Deep Woods OFF helped some.

This is the absolute best for keeping bugs away, even killing them on contact, but its probably not the safest thing in the world to use often. Thats why I go for the more natural items: brewer's yeast and garlic...

I think they were talkng about the black flies not mosquitos. I usually use the Off Deep Woods and I think it works pretty good but I don't wanna get up there with just that and have it not work.

Thanks I'll have to get me some of that to try. Even if the stuff isn't the safest thing to use, it may be better then getting bit up the whole trip.

    all you need...

    Whiskey
    Beer
    Shotgun
    pants & long sleeves
    long socks and boots
    100% DEET
    tin foil
    lighter

If you are using a lodge/guide that is worth their salt, they will have a "what to bring" list

    don't take a head net

    Again
Canada is HUGE country with a range of fish... knowing where you are going will impact what to bring

KJH807, thanks. I think the lodge is sending a list but I just wanted to get an idea if anybody had stuff that they certainly wouldn't leave behind. I'll be honest, I couldn't wear a head net. I'll stick with bug spray and just realize it's all part of the experience.

I actually found that website this morning. Alot of good info about the lake on there.

Don't worry, I'll have a full trip report when I get back. With lots of pictures...hopefully some of them are pictures of fish we catch.

bring fishing rods.  and some lures.  also if you're relying on a GPS to get to your location, make dam sure you update it and make sure quebec is on it.

Rods and lures probably would make the fishing easier lol. The lodge were staying at is providing directions, thanks for the advice.

Old Woodsman was the best fly dope and would definitely keep the black flies, no-see ums, deer/horse flies, mosquitoes off you. If you can't find it, you can make your own. Basic ingrediants are "oil of tar" (kerosene), camphor, citronella, and a mineral oil base.

LURES: Williams, Pixies, Red & White Daredevil etc. - all will work. If you're not taking your own boat, you should check out their policies on use of their boats. We had one who wanted his boats in by 3:30 - about the time you should be going out in the afternoon!!!

God does not take from your life, the time spent fishing!
