Crappie

I've been reading that with this warm weather the crappie might start to turn on. I've never fished specifically for crappie before, but started to read about it and just wanted to see if anyone had some more tips on bait, locations of a lake to fish, etc. Gonna be fishing from shore so that will limit my options..

Minnows under a float. Depending on what they're doing, this time of year they could be in 30fow or 2ft off the bank. Your best bet would be to target downed trees near shore maybe.

I really wanted to do some crappie fishing on the side today, I hope this weather gets nicer out here. People tear them up at Somerset lake and there is no size limit on them. I got some new jigs I really want to try, I think they will really work pretty good, what do you guys think?

Berkley's gulp 1"/2 cm in Chartreuse Shad and Minnow colors(don't have a photo for that, but it's pretty self-explanatory)

    Thanks

I don't eat catfish anymore. One day I caught one, it was the most fun I ever had catching a fish and when i held him, he started talking to me. I respected that fish, and I promised him i wouldn't hurt his kind ever again, but crappies ..well, those are fair game.

It may all ready be to late in the season but an easy way to catch them is if your lake has reeds or any other cover right along the shore is to wade slowly in knee to thigh high water.  Any openings you see in thick cover drop a twister tail down and hope.  The more little pockets you can hit without moving the better.

I normally use my 6 foot ultra light spinning rod but also like to use one of the B & M crappie buster poles that is 12 feet or so long.

If they are not there cast out from the cover and slowly retrieve.  On the lake I fish last nights storm really **** them down so far today.

Amy, Those gulps you posted are a secret. Don't tell anyone... LOL! Seriously though, I KILLED some monster slabs on those last Sunday. Same exact thing. Fished them on a 1/32oz feather jig. Chartruese and Hot pink were the colors. Find a good shallow end of a lake that would make a good spawning area and fish the edge of it where it drops down into deeper water. You will find the big ones near the bottom in 8'-10' of water. You can put that jig under a slip bobber and have it set to 1' above bottom. No live minnow required. However, live minnows work well too. Give it a try and let me know how you do.
