lake trout info
I have been fishinhg Erie for Walleye Bass and Steelhead, for about 20 years. I have never fished for Lake Trout but would like to give it a try. All I know is fish near the mountain and troll spoons. I was hoping that some one could tell me how deep of water and how far down to put the ball, also how far to run the spoon behind the ball, and how fast to troll. I would also like to know what water temp the fish start to hit. Is the last week of April to early?

They are hitting now, although not in large numbers yet...nearshore water is still pretty muddy. You don't need to fish near the mountain...they're in 25-40' right now. Start at these depths when the water clears up (should be pretty clear by the middle of next week) and troll between 1.5-2.2 mph. I like spoons with oranges, blues and greens. Read your finder to determine the depth.

I read somewhere once that you need to fish your lures within a couple feet of the bottom for lakers, is this true or can you get them suspended sometimes?

Saw either a big brown or laker in the bay other day, tossed my spinnerbait in front of it, it chased. Couldn't believe it

DrumR, I caught several lakers last fall suspended from the bottom. I was fishing in 35 f.o.w. my marks were 15-25' down. We were picking up fish 18' down on the riggers and jet 20 with 45' leads. However last spring, most of our marks on the inside of the mountain were very close to the bottom. At that time we def had our balls in the mud. Your electronics will tell you were to put those spoons. There is no mistaking laker marks either. They are very dense marks. Im looking forward to getting up there in a few weeks. I will compare fall vs. spring.

Is northeast the place to be for lakers? or can you get into them outside of the bay? Ill be in the bay on saturday looking for some steelies, but i wouldnt mind making a run out to try for a laker.

DrumR There are lakers east of p.i. you just may have to make a run to the inside of the mountain. Look around and see what you can find. I would imagine the lake has cleared up with all this mild weather. Riggers and dipsys with spoons. Dont be afraid to set a couple higher lines with some plugs off your boards. Let us know what you find. Good luck! I will be in port clinton to try to troll up some big girls. Gonna try to jig up some males for dinner too. Its on fire out there right now. good luck, hopefully that rain holds off this weekend. I wanted to try port clinton this weekend but I am starting a new job monday so Im going to take it easy, but I might try to head out there the next weekend or 2. Those reports on the ohio boards are unreal...

I caught a few of the mountains through the years but Barcelona NY Erie was sick with them,it's not that far fron N.E. but you need NY lic. I never really kept them,I caught way to many in lake Ont. They like slow speeds 1.5 mph and will hit most bright spoons and should be up in the water colum now.
