Which fillet knife do you prefer?
My old Walmart fillet knife is junk, it won't hold an edge. I have to sharpen it about every 10 fish, and when you are trying to clean a mess of Crappies that gets to be a pain. I have ruined several decent fillets due to the dull knife and don't want to keep doing that! So I want to get a quality fillet knife, my question is which knive (Make/model)do you all prefer? And what is the best method of sharpening them? Thanks in advance. Tight lines & God bless

The Rapala has been my fillet knife for 12 years in the 6" and 7.5" sizes. I've not had to replace. sharpener works that comes with it.

Have a new electric rapala too, but haven't caught enough edible fish to warrant it's use since I got it. Soon. One way to keep your edge I've found; Use a different knife for the initial 'gill cut' than your main fillet knife. I use a bigger cheap plastic handled fillet knife, but even a regular 6" chefs knife or a boning knife would do. The main fillet knife keeps it's edge a lot longer when it only cuts fish... not scales.

I normally use a Mr. Twister piranha because it handles the heavy ribcages of big walleye, but I have an older rapala electric that works great on smaller fish like crappie and perch.

Ive burnt up more Mr. twisters than i can count. Made the switch to American angler knives last year and love them. Also use some older rapelas that work well but i really like the American angler.

The plastic gears of the regular green twisters burn out easily...The saltwater Piranha's have metal gears and can tear through several limits of big 'eyes without even getting warmed up. I've heard good things about the American Angler MT3's (also metal geared) as well, but haven't used one.

Used to use the old (still have it) wooden handled Rapala, have since switched to electrics. Like my older Rapala electric best, but the replacement blades are junk and don't stay sharp very long. If you still carve pumpkins at Halloween, the old Rapala knives are great for that too. Thin, flexible, sharp blades allow for some fancy cuttin'

American Angler electric is my favorite. I have a Rapala electric, but the motor is not as powerful - also have regular fillet knives but prefer the American Angler. Re: cleaning a bunch of crappie (perch) - put them in a cooler with ice or firm up in refrigerator and you can really zip throught them!

Thanks guys for all the feed back, lots of good advice and suggestions. Looks like I'll be looking into a good electric fillet knife. In the mean time I'll go get a wooden handled Rapala.

Cutco is a great knife and you can drop them off or ship to Olean NY for re-honing. #2 choices would be Henckles or Wusthof None of these are cheap but are great knifes Only problem is if you loose them-Guess how I know that

Electric Rapala I like the plug in because the battery in the chargeable will burn out. But I use it at least once a week for perch and so on works like a charm. However, you still need a steady knife for skinning fish.

Gerber gator. Used it on everything from yellowfin to crappie. They make 2 sizes. IMO much better than the Rapala

Case fillet knives and in past Rapala. For big fish 10+lbs I have a Dexter its from Japan but has plenty of backbone and good steel. Any fillet knife I use I touch up sharpen before starting. We live in Pa and it is hard to find case fillet knives if they are even still made. They have excellent steel I believe it is better than the Rapala but they are both good.

I have quite a few knives for fileting various fish. Rapalas, Dexter-Russell, nice kitchen knives, electric, and Forschner. My electric knives are great for fileting Walleyes, but suck for Salmon and Steelhead. My 12" Forschner Scimitre blade rocks for fileting King Salmon, and larger Steelhead. My Dexter-Russells rock for fileting the ribs out of Salmon, and for Steelhead and Walleyes (if you want to get the most meat out of a Walter). Truthfully, I rarely use my Rapala knives anymore. I sharpen my own knives, and can put a great edge on, if they knife will take a good edge. Some knives won't take a real good edge, and I have no use for those.
