Night Perch

Does anyone ever night fish for Erie yellow perch from shore or off the piers and have much success? If so, what months are the best?

I've never went out perching before, but after eating some a couple times last year I'm ready to. I wouldn't mind doing a little night perch fishing in the spring or fall when I'm up on a steelhead trip, but don't want to cut into my daylight hours when I'm chasing steel. Is this a possibility during Nov, Dec, or Mar?

Anything is possible. Been my experience that typically right at sunset the perch bite stops.

That's also what I've always heard.  Have fished for crappie many times at night with a light and have never caught even a stray perch.

There was a discussion like this last year on the ice fishing boards. While I have never had any luck for perch at night, some guys claimed that with a flasher they found tight schools late at night and fished them with some success. Others claimed glow baits and glow jigs would catch night perch. Their reports however were not enough to get me out there past dark.

Sounds like everyone pretty much agrees, thanks for the info guys! Maybe I'll spend a few daylight hours going after them sometime.

my best outings last yr were at night. while it was slow for stretches of time, 11 pm and on brought BIG perch through the ice. I fished until 4 am one time, hitting pigs the whole time. glow jigs and lively minnows.

From shore, it's a lot less productive, but if I had access to a boat and the right winds, I wouldn't hesitate to give it a try once or twice, just to see if I can repeat the night-bite I've had thru the ice. BUT, as productive as it is RIGHT NOW, the night attempt will have to wait. Stop typing, go fishing.

sunrise to about 10:00 am., 2-3 hours before sunset has been most effective for myself. had success at night very few times, not enough for me to even pursue .
