I've only seen a handful of wolf tracks in my lifetime but they all were larger than that one and none were in the snow. Did the tracks meander around or were they in a straight line headed for somewhere.

It does not appear to be oval enough to be a coyote or wolf track. Based on the fact it is so close to being round, instead of oval, I am betting it is a dog track.

If you followed it for a distance you could probably figure it out simply by the pattern of the prints along with the ways and the places it walked. Coyotes tend to walk in the low spots such as the tire tracks, the ditches and the gullies they come to.

    Bioloo,

    x 2

yote are 3- 4" front to rear max,,

    usually narrower pad marks

hard to gage age of track via pic (meltage)

my vote = BIG DAWG - that eats Purina...

    non-expurt tip:

notice the "classic coyote X pattern" in the tracks in my pics..

domestic dogs have them too - but not as pronounced as a yote track.
notice in first pic - middle of X is sort of "bulbous - for lack of better term" due to doggie hair between domestic doggy paw pads(breed dependent also).

sidenote - fox tracks (are obviously smaller) but, most of the time - do not have the X pattern because they have hair between their paw-pads which tends to obscure the X)...
if paws are wet, the "hair humpy" is not as pronounced.

Google pics will show very nice comparsions - yote, fox, bobcats, etc.

I came upon a nearly full breed wolf around Emlenton years ago. It was friendly and followed me around. There was a lady near where I was working(putting in property lines) that had some wolf mixes so I loaded it in car and went to her house. Her brother was there and all he could say was beautiful animal. It was late so I took it home. Found owners friend next day. Found out later it was killing deer in valley or just feeding on dead deer it found(unlikely in middle of summer). Huge animal and ran long distances in heat in front of my vehicle without even panting. My bird dog would have been lathing and sucking in air in its prime. It was a magnificent animal. After being around that wolf cross I have no doubt they can kill any deer they want.

It had a collar on and was quite friendly. bigger than any german shepard I have ever seen. I held a leash and my kids played with it. I beleave it was quite young also. When it saw our goats was the only time I was not sure I could control it as at that time I did not have it on a leash. It listend to me though and backed off.

Wolves have a run called a lope. It allows them to run all day without tiring if necessary. When they do it as a pack no other animal can outlast them. Very effective to say the least.
