Scarface
Looks like this feller had a pretty rough season. I guess I need to make sure my stands are setup on his right side next fall

ORIGINAL: Esox_Hunter Looks like this feller had a pretty rough season. I guess I need to make sure my stands are setup on his right side next fall You might want to consider calling your WCO and letting him/her know of this deer. Under the perfect conditions and opportunity it might be worth trying to capture this deer and removing that chunk of antler from his jaw. He might do ok with it but it might get to the point it is having an adverse affect on his ability to survive. I am sure he would do better if it could be removed. The question would be if it could be done without causing more harm than good. It is probably worth at least discussing it with the local WCO. R.S. Bodenhorn

I must say that I never considered contacting my local WCO. I will give him a ring this week to get his input. This is the first and only picture we have of him so far, so hopefully he stays in the area if the WCO wishes to try and 'operate'. Have you (PGC) successfully removed a chunk of embedded antler such as this before? Based on your experience, is this injury likely to be debilitating or even fatal?

Are you sure it is a piece of antler and not just the hide with the hair scraped off. Look at it with a glass.

I put a magnifier uo to the pick, and it certainly appears to be a piece antler. You can see where it entered at the bottom, and the protrusion above. You can actually see where the skin is lifted up by it, in between. Suks. I hear the cheekmeat is the tastiest.

I would be suprised if the PGC would spend time or money to trap and remove the piece. This is part of nature...WF

After thinking about it, I tend to agree with WF here that this is simply part of nature. Even if the PGC would come out to intervene, I don't feel that it would be a very good use of their resources.

If it was coming in on a frequent bases and in the right situation I would perhaps try to dart it and immobile it if I was sure it was a piece of antler. If it is a piece of antler, a stick or other foreign object it could probably be removed pretty easily once tranquillized or captured. The problem with that is that sometimes a deer will die from being immobilized and handled. If it could be captured in one of the clover traps it could probably be handled without putting it out and have a pretty good chance of being successful. Whether it is feasible to get a clover trap there would probably depend on where the deer is located and how often it is coming in. It is very possible the WCO would elect to do nothing and I might make the same decision once I had an opportunity to make an evaluation of the deer and the feasibility of capturing it. Different WCOs handle such situations in different manners. But, who knows what the best course of action would be until they have a chance to evaluate the situation. At the least you should continue to keep an eye out for this deer. If it starts going down hill physically get in touch with the WCO so they can do what ever is deemed best for the deer. Many deer do receive such injuries and then do just fine with them for years and then others will die as a result of the injuries they receive. This is one of those with no always correct or incorrect answers and becomes a judgment call that might be right or wrong depending on the final outcome. R.S. Bodenhorn

Looked at that white mark for a long time and think the jury may well still be out as to wether its a piece of bone or simply a hairless area of scarring. In that longer range photo he looks to be in good physical condition however the close up looks like there still may be some swollen infection going on or perhaps some permanent disfiguration - Overall looks like it still in the healing process but not hurting his general health- lucky deer. Could a bad molar infection have traveled all the way up to his eye area ?? Saw an African deer once that had a large blowout hole from a bad molar with a large facial response too-looked similar around the jaw- not all the way up to the eye like that but still huge.

My guess is the white line is scarring and the bottom of the jaw that looks like bone is where the skin has pushed down from the area void of skin. If it scabs over before the flies come out it may live but if it becames a repository for blowfly and other parasite eggs it's in trouble. It does look to be in good condition otherwise as of now.

amazing... to think with the thousands of deer killed and wounded in PA each year by vehicle, predator, poacher, and disease... some guy's trail-pic of a wounded deer would even be considered for a call for action. Do the wardens really have that much time on their hands that they would even waste even a moment considering looking for this deer??? Seriously??? Geesh! btw- to original poster: neat pic. grody, for sure... LOL (and glad to read that YOU never even considered contacting the authorities. someone else has some sense of nature's process)

The PGC could capture and release it in 2-B and the troubles for the deer would soon be over....WF.

Yea they can't even pick up a road kill. I watched a warden drive right by one yesterday in Beaver Co. And there doing to take time to catch a wounded deer? My guess if they did show up,they would put it down if they saw it.

My guess if they did show up,they would put it down if they saw it. It is now PennDOTs job to pick up the road killed deer on any state highways. The Game Commission will still pick them up on roads that are not state highways. PennDOT gets money from the federal government to remove highway-killed animals so it is only right that they do it instead of the Game Commission if they are already receiving the money for doing it. The Game Commission used to pick up the highway-killed deer but PennDOT has been doing it now for a few years. PennDOT used to and maybe still does put out contracts for deer removal in some areas of the state instead of doing it themselves but in other areas they either do it themselves or it does not get done at all. With all those Coyotes, Mt lions, Hyenias, and bigfeet you guys stock. There should be no need for anyone to "pick them up". They should be gone "eaten" within minutes of being hit

Economic stimulus through corporate subsidy. Road kill is the primary ingredient in Spam. The company ( and it's jobs ) would be lost without this "bailout".

Can't be -- no union involvement or green energy initiative. I say get picking up road kill out of the federal government and back to the states where they can decide the amount of tolorable rot.
