Well he shot the porcupine out of a tree, and it fell down right on his head. He is very lucky he did not get any quails in his eyes. A total of about 150 quills were taken out at the hospital. It was the first time they had anyone come in with quills in their face. I just saw him today, and you can barely tell it happened.

I am going to guess that he shot it or somehow knocked it out of the tree it was in then failed to run when it started falling toward him? Or maybe stuck his head down to look into a hole under a rock? In any event he is darn lucky he still has both of his eyes. The quills from a porcupine are barbed and work on a vacuum to keep going deeper. If left in there, or you miss getting all of it out, it will go completely under the skin and if in a place where it doesnt hit something to turn it will go all the way through an arm or leg muscle and come out the other side. If it reaches a vital organ it can and sometimes will be fatal. R.S. Bodenhorn

I see the answer came while I was typing and posting. It seems my first guess was pretty close to what happened. He is darn lucky. R.S. Bodenhorn

Those darn porkys are man killers i tell you, man killers. Need a bigger gun. That's also a first for me to see or feel , a few in the hands but not even close to that. I actually thought the photo might have been faked.

Man I ran into one of those things opening day of rifle hunting for deer. Pitch black in the morning as I was walking to my stand. I heard a growl that I hadn't heard before but sounded like it was only a few feet from me. Sure enough there was a big one perched on a stump about a foot and a half off the ground growling at me. He started to raise his quills. Sure enough I made the biggest circle around that thing that I almost didn't make it to my stand by first light.

Saw this on a cell pic Monday...we must know some of the same people crappiefisher... some, not the sharpest tools in the shed. lol Talk about 'scared'...I can't imagine having my head poked in a hole & a porky falling on it. Be like having a mad rat in a bag tied around your neck - only pointier. Glad he got to keep his eyes.

Why is he not bleeding......not one drop? That's why I thought the photo might be fake. You would think there would be just a bit of blood from the twisting, pulling, bending, etc of the quills in a guys face from a falling porkey. I will have to say though that in my experience there is very little bleeding involved as long as the quills are left alone after entry due to the taper of the quill. Actually not very much after they are pulled out if it's done correctly.

What have we learned from this? Obviously, when porcupine hunting, a full face helmet isn't a luxury, it is a NECESSITY!
