    Asian carp.

    My worst nightmare......

    It will be all over.
    Marinas will close
    charters will shut down
    fishing and boating will end
small great lakes cities that thrive on the lakes resources will crash.

It makes me sick when i start to dwell on it. Erie is a special place for me. I would be heart broken if Erie went out like that.

I am taking a wait and see attitude to the Asian carp. I hope they can be stopped, but I am afraid they are already in the Great lakes. There was an article awhile back that suggested that they found DNA from the carp past where they had erected the electrified barrier.

Introduced species always are a threat to native species and can bring about a huge change the ecosystem, but until they have had time in the ecosystem it is not clear exactly what they will or will not do. People predicted the zebra mussels would destroy the walleye fishing because they would clean the water too much. Last time I heard the walleye fishing was OK. The gobies were going to eat all the bass eggs and the bass populations would crash. The bass fishing seems to be OK. At this point I honestly don't think anyone knows exactly what these Asian carp are going to do or not do. They have reeked havoc on the river systems where they are found, but a river is way different from a Great lake.

Let's hope and pray for the best. Who knows, they may benefit the fishing. Stranger things have happened. Of course, maybe the poachers will like them and start focusing on the carp and leave the steelhead alone.

BTW - the Asian carp is supposed to be pretty good to eat. So if you can't beat 'em, eat 'em.

Well, as long as we're off the original topic of natives & onto asian carp....

There was an article in In fisherman recently that stated, in a study by the Missouri Department of Conservation, a blind taste test was given using Catfish, Talapia, and Asian carp. Asian carp won 2-1.
Here's some good info on them if anyone's interested.

And for the record, I'm no asian carp advocate. Just thought it was a good read.
I hope they don't make it to Erie...but I think it's only a matter of time.

Whats so funny about that post is how matter of factly he talks about catching "native" brookies and how cool it is like he was the first to discover them in our polluted, stocked creeks. That was a gem of a report. I'm gonna give him a break and say that was a very young buck that is very sadly mistaken.

It doesn't matter what you do with Talapia, it still tastes awful. It taste like some one caught it, threw it into a bucket of river water, then filleted it, and then threw the fillet back into the bucket of water again before cooking it.

Hey Drake, the "natives" aren't swimming up, they are swimming down from where they were born in the swamps of upper Elk and the drainage pipes of Walnut.

Should we start pressuring the pfbc to make elk and walnut "class A"?

We need to protect the natives.
