2/19/12 Took my new rod out

So I FINALLY got out to try my new 10.5 noodle rod. I went up to the wires today. Crowds were medium and boat traffic heavy. Fished from around 7:45 till 11:30 had a real short window before the SU game toady at 1:00. 8 boats went by and 2 fished right across from me for about 2 hours. Tied up some blue and orange sacs last night so that was the plan. On the 2nd cast one slammed it and the battle was on. I wasn't expecting a hit as I was still experimenting with my shot to get the float right. Got it right up to the net and it popped the hook, looked to be a 8 to 10 pound hen. Hit another about 15 to 20 later this one popped the hook 10 feet from shore. Nothing for over an hour so I switched to a pink rubber worm on a jig and had a take on that, but it was an on and off. Nothing again for an hour so I took off for the LFZ for an hour and NOTHING was happening there at all,saw no fish on. Blue egg sacs were the ticket for me today as well as the guy next to me, he had 3 takes on blue an 2 on a pink worm He said he started at 6:45.

On a side note I talked to a guy walking his dog at the wires, by the sounds of his conservation with the boats he was a guide. He said the reservoir was quite low and at his camp up on the tug there is only 25% of the snow there should be. He also said the flow of the river up there was quite low and places that average thigh deep up there are ankle deep right now. Said he would not be surprised if everything would be done mid April and many eggs (and fish) would not survive a low water spring.

See everyone next weekend, I still gots lots of egg sacs left.

Forgot to add that I did land one. It was a big fat sucker ready to pop with eggs. Caught on a blue egg sac.

That sucker is why you use sucker spawn flies, they are laying them and eating them :)
Those water levels can change, long range forecast shows precip. starting Wed. for 5-6 days.
Speaking of the boats on the river, last year someone posted that 40+ went by in one day, reminded him of D-day.

I tied up a bunch last night with all means of using them, but I left that box in the car. . Sucker spawn was the first fly I tied on up in the LFZ. Personally think there are not many fish in the LFZ as they have moved up to the hatchery

Clint, the LFZ has plenty of fish. I had lots of hook-ups yesterday (and some good ones banked) before moving on.There's a reason it's crowded.  The steelhead don't all run to the hatchery.  Considering 1" of rain = 8" of snow, things can change fast.   Reservoirs are kept at winter pool to accomodate heavy spring rains, too.

Its always nice to brake in a new rod on its first putting... good job.

I rolled over rt. 52 bridge on Saturday and saw a triple hookup while I passed. I opted for the staircase though. My buddy hooked one and that was it. Apparently fish were there in middle of last week.... I later talked to some folks who hammered them in the clarks falls area...makes sense timing wise... give it a few days and Altmar should be on fire with fish and crowds
