Need some Drift Boat Tips
I recently purchased a CRT low side. http://www.boulderboatworks.com/. I bought it to take my dad fishing up on the SR. We have been going up there for 22 yrs and its always different. My dad cant walk the rocks anymore so I am going to surprise him when I pick him up with the boat. I recently returned from Afghanistan and am looking forward to fishing the river this year because I couldn't last year. I know drifters are not well liked up there but oh well. As long as I'm not getting shot at or blown up anymore, I'm not worried. What I am worried about is the dont's on the river with a Drift boat. Can any seasoned guides give me any tips i.e river flows, specific water columns to follow and what to keep clear of. I would appreciate this. This is for my dad which whom I owe my life. The man taught me the beauty of fishing for steelies and mentored me all the way through. Retirement is coming in a year for me and I do have my eye on possibly guiding up there. Semper Fi

First I thank you for your service to this great country we live in. You might want to contact Randy Jones,he is a guide on the SR and checks in here every so often. He can be reached at YankeeAngler.com I believe.Or go to SalmonCrazy.com and check in there, more guides on that site than here.

Good luck and have fun with your new purchase. The bend at ellis and above muskrat have always been most sketchy for me especially when anglers are fishing there. I am not a seasoned boater by any means but I have floated my pontoon down a handfuls of times up to 1800 cfs. The key for me was back paddling to stear. I know there is a common etiquette that resident boaters all have. Maybe 3 fan can chime in as I was quite impressed with his boating ability. When i float my pontoon boat I usually pick times when few anglers and boaters are out. There are summer water releases that the reservoir schedules every year. Check out the waterline link that is in the top thread here for those dates. Its a good time to get out on the water for practice while no anglers are out...the plus side is there are many small mouths and some atlantic and steelhead in the river as well... Again have fun and good luck. I

Gents I appreciate the info and thank you for recognizing me as I serve this nation. To answer Drake: Mission Accomplished.....we took the fight to those bastards so hard they were on their knees as we stood around them. We only spared the ones who were smart and dropped their weapons. I dont think the other ones are visiting too many virgins by the way they looked when they went out. I will keep checking back in to see if anyone else has any more info. Hows the actual weather and are the steelies running in force? I should be rolling up that way by the end of the month or beginning of next. You will see a spanking new drifter with only one man on the bow sitting proud and that will be my dad. I will be the mule rowing. I will be sure to make it known there are two Marines onboard. Thanks you to you all that have written. Semper Fi

For Safety reasons you may want to stay up top at least until you get your feet wet. Altmar to Pineville. Always point the bow of your boat to the outside of a bend or turn. Stay as tight to bank anglers as possible without taking there feet out. If you must go over a hole or down the middle of a run, that is occupied by anglers, simply lift your oars rather than digging them. In 500cfs you can go either side of the trestle in 350 or less I go river right! just personal preference. Its wise to watch other boats and where they go through the rapid sections or follow them from a safe distance. Good luck and have fun! Bill

Fishing Marine, I also Thank You for your service to our great country. Rather than offer tips I offer to you my boat and a great shore lunch. Best way to learn the river is in the boat can give you way more tips in 4 hours than in a week of emails and pms. I can fish anytime, carphd did make a good point with staying up top, pineville down can be real rough any lower than 500cfs, and there never is a reason to float past the ballpark. Dime also made good points on the muskrat and ellis and let me also add the trestle. Like I said Thank You and let me know when you have some free time We can take a float, fight some fish, have some lunch and no one will shoot at you, promise!

Thanks for your service. I have no issue at all with drifters as long as they do not pull up park in front of me and cut me off. If you are just going by once or twice or at a spot before I am there that OK by me. May be wise to hire a guide to ride with you (don't know if they will do that) or take a trip with them. Explain you just got the boat and ask for pointers. Weather is wackey no snow on the ground and at least 2 or 3 days a week for the past few weeks in the mid 40's. Same next week too. Lots of fish in the river in their usual haunts. Could be an early spawn this year because of that.

I was going to say find a guide you can give a couple bucks and follow them a time or two. I know carphd has been rowing the river for a couple decades.

I might even dust off the cobwebs and see if these old flabby arms can still row the river. Lord knows I can't fish anymore, but it's still fun to RUN into OLD friends.

Thanks for all the info. Semper Fi Ray! I would love to see the missile launcher Carphd. Sounds like a good time. I agree with a four hour trip vice a lot of emails. Hopefully I can take you up on the trip 3fan and those are some great tips too and I like the promise. I will do all I can Clint not to poke someone. I have the outmost respect for all fishermen. I used to hate getting cut off but I understand that the guides have to make a living so give and take I say. Carphd sounds like he's the river king and drifting. I will definitely get out at Pineville. Thanks for the welcome home Fichy. I am a little nervous about setting in up at Altmar fly. That bridge looks a little tricky to get too then get down. I think I will watch and learn and maybe pay to play like WaDerboy said to. I think thats a great Idea. I cant thank you all enough for the info. Feels good to know there are some true Americans out there helping each other out. Thats why I like the fishing community. I cant offer much but when Im up there and you need a hand with anything call me out on the river. Im a 6'1 slim and lean just not so mean anymore. My boat will be looking good and I'm sure to hang a Marine Corps sticker on both sides. I would love to stop and chat with you. I'm excited on a possible early run. As dime did say I will be slow to nav through muskrat. I know the bovines is a bit slim so i might be cautious through there too. I will try to get in touch with yankee angler. I appreciate the direction Pafisher. Again thanks to you all........

The thing about taking a ride is that as the passenger you don't have to make the moves so you never really learn. By closely following a boat that knows the right seams, which way to aim the bow and when to dig the oars you just have a 10 second delay and then you do what you just watched being done. I've always learned best by doing not watching. carphd, As for running into old friends, you just might have to carry my 260 lb lard bottom from hole to hole the next time we fish together. At least you used to know how to fish. Some of us never had that going for us. Grim determination waiting for the suicidal halfwitted overly aggressive fish to bump into my hook got me most of my fish.

Took the boys down this morning, hooked 1 fish up by the altmar bridge. They got cold and we called it by 10:30am. Noticed today that, my driftboat is older than 3 of the new guides I saw floating the river today.
