Rabbits!
Got just enough snow to hunt rabbits this morning. I hunted by myself without dogs for 2 hours. Put out 3 rabbits(that I saw) no shots. Such a shame no one hunts rabbits anymore. When I lived in Erie, I could get 3 or 4 guys easily to hunt em by the train tracks in North East. At least I got some good exercise!

I said this to a buddy of mine just today. Small game population as grown and nobody is hunting them any more. I'm seeing squirrels the size of cats now, where they used to be much smaller. So much woods are being posted, but I've learned that's only for hunting deer. Most landowners don't care if you hunt small game or coyotes.

That's what I miss most about hunting. It seems I only hunt deer, turkey, and geese now.I lived to hunt bunnies after Christmas,I alway had 2-5 beagles that could flat out smoke a bunny.I love a little under 13 inch dog that's fast and straight.Get one up 15-20 min. run bang then get another one going. That's my 2012-13 season mission to get in better shape and get a couple of little bunny busters. It doesn't get any better rolling a rabbit a high speeds with my little Browning 20g. auto and a couple of beagles closing in on the bunny.

"Went for a hike at moraine at porters cove. Where the porta potty was was a big pile of rabbit fur and carcass's. Dave" Well now we know where Wezel's dogs were hanging out while they were missing.

I missed the days when our party of five back then would hunt the farm fields (alfalfa) and pastures in Westmoreland Co. kickin'up bunnies all day long. Never had a beagle, needed a beagle or owned a beagle back then. The action was none-stop. Much of that same land today is now occupied by Walmart, Sunoco, McDonalds, Wendys and a bunch of new homes.

Who would shoot and gut a rabbit and then pile them up and not use or give to someone that would eat them. I was taught at a young age if you kill it you better clean it and eat it or give it to someone that can use it. In my beagle hay days 150 bunnies a year was the norm, I average in the 50's for years and the tag alongs shot around a 100. Some days all the rabbits ended up in my van because nobody wanted to clean them,as tired as I was I would clean them and give almost all of them to people that wanted a rabbit dinner. I killed tons of geese in Ohio and really got sick of cleaning them and finding homes for them, that's why I don't kill 200 geese a year any more 25-30 is more than enough.I get sick of people that kill for the fun of it and waste game, they shoot a piles of deer and throw last years away or feed it to their dog. There are a lot of people out there that could use the meat.I urge all hunter to give a little to some needy family's that really needs help.

+1 Looked like they only took the back legs. Kinda sad really!! +2 That was ignorant of them to do that. The only explanation I can think of as to why they would only take the back legs is because they were to badly shot up.

Backs ( or loin have a lot of meat) When we killed 100's we would have a big HOT WING game dinner just out of the front legs. There better than chicken wings and healther.

I hardly ever see bunnies in the woods - for all the miles I walk, once in blue-moon kick one out.. Dogs are the way to go.. Last year I went with a guy and his pack of Beaglers.. I enjoyed watchin them little packs of dynamite work more than taking the shots at the rabbits they worked back to us... Those tails can break the sound barier they wag so fast...

Grouse is tough to beat, but I love all small game.Squirrels, bunnies, ring necks, dove are all great.I've eaten plenty of young ground hogs in my younger day. You just have to know how to cook them.Cut them into 5 pieces take scent glands out under front legs, soak over night in water,a little vinegar, salt and a big onion.Rinse off and boil till all most tender, drain dip into and egg wash, roll in 4 C' Italian bread crumbs and fry in a big cast iron pan. It's really pretty good but I haven't eaten it in 20 years. All wild game is good tablefare if shot right and handled(cooled and field dressed right)and cooked right.

Quail are even better than grouse. I believe that as the birds get smaller, they get tastier. Now If I could just get the pointers to hold a hummingbird to a solid point, I woud be in culinary heaven.

DarDys,it's been a h--- of a long time for wild quail. But as I remember quite tasty, very mild light pink flesh.I culinary treat.I shot a few in the 70's and early 80's ran into a few coveys here and there and my setter had fun,fun to hunt the singles after the bust up,it a real fire drill on a covey flushing in your face but did drop a couple of double with my o/u 20g.

It's all in the way they are cooked. IMO, of actual wild game (not including ringnecks) the way I have had it on my plate I'll have to go with RG. In fact some of the best eating (much to my suprise) has been snowshoe rabbit from the clearcuts of Warren and Mckean counties.

Agree that some of those others are neat ta eat too but Bunnies is here for all of us and ya dont have ta remember 20 yrs ago or go on a long trip anyplace to find them either. Those hogs taste great but would need a real excursion to go someplace for one. Bunnies- right out back--for most all of us too----------
