Third week of April

Will be coming to the Salmon River the third week of this coming April and wondering what fish I can expect and what flies I should be using for each. Had some luck this fall during the Salmon Run with black and blue stoneflies (steelhead) as well as the Polar Shrimp. I saw virtually everyone fishing wet flies, but wondered if any of you ever tried mouse patterns on top with any success?

Stayed in Altmar but did not find many places around there for a good breakfast or dinner. Any recommendations of where to eat would also be appreciated.

Third week in april can be pretty hot or cold. all really depends on the weather and the water level at at that time. Most abundant fish would be steel head from the lower river all the way to the upper river. pending on water levels lower river may holdthe spring brown and atlantic as well as some small mouth. Be ready to move around a lot as you will know if the fish are there or not. Flies will also depend on water level. But For the most part Your typical streamers(buggers in all colors even bright) , nymphs, wets, and eggs, will work. B prepared to have many sizes and colors at hand. It wouldn't hurt to check in to this forum when your trip is nearing so you can see what the condition reports and suggestions are at that time. good luck

+1 on the spawn and what Dime said.  The restaurant/tackle store by the LFZ  (across from Malindas) has excellent breakfast sandwiches. Everything I've had there was good. Nice people, too.

Sucker Spawn, Altmar bar & tackle and dont over look Streamers in the deeper fast waters..
From here on given these conditiond my flies get larger..
End of April could be Great could be dead..
Alot depends on water temps, flow, spawning fish , release from hatchery and drop backs..

I tend to be on other adventures by then but may be missing out for sure..
Great time to be outdoors no doubt..

3rd week there WILL b fish--often in good #'s(pods). Just about anything will work as ur 95% dealing w/ droppies. I tend to use bigger stuff then as the river will b loaded w/ ravenous juvie steel and alts and I prefer to not hook em if I can---if u feel the smolts hittin and all of a sudden they stop--work it over good cause that usually means a bigger fish has moved in.

Steel on a pin---so easy a caveman can do it.

I hereby nominate that statement as FishUSA TIP OF THE MONTH !!!

Considering the resevoir is low and the lack of snow/rain, does anyone think the 3rd week of April might be too late (due to lack of water flow) to miss the steelie/brown trout run? I am considering moving my dates up to either the first or second week of April.

There should be drop backs but plan on any pre spawn fish to be spooky and shy. I can't predict what the weather might yet have in store so advice given could shoot myself in the foot . If it were me however givin what I seen thurs- suckers already - steelhead on the spawn- water low & clear I'd go as early as possible

Heard bout suckers already and an early spawn but didnt see any suckers in the feeder I walked Sunday AM and when its that time they are usually there.
Also heard bout Steel spawning already but the same thing goes in that feeder - nothing happening yet- not even stageing.
Early - yea if it keeps gettin warmer and there isnt any snow- but its only late Feb= March can still come in like a lion and be cold- Just Indian summer IMHO.- albeit a warm snow free kinda winter- thats  good for the turks and deer.
Kinda agree with that spooky and shy thingie Tuna mentioned-even with the nice weather and guys around it was picky this past few days. One here and one there kinda fishin. So it may well be a bit earlier than usual but then usual always seems to have a spread of a coupla weeks for the main thing and the minor stuff is spread even further most of the time. Heck I have seen them spawiing the third week of May for several years running now in a coupla 'secret' spots in the SR.

It is still february. It is common to have late running rainbows and summer runs spawning at this time. There are still plenty of freshies to come that will be hungry :) The lower the water stays at this point, the later the spawn for the spring run.. time and weather will tell what 3rd week in april will have in store... either way, go get em :)

Welll - was up again this week and still didnt see suckers in a feeder but guys did talk bout them in the main river- up high too-didnt see any Steel in the feeder either as yet.
The kicker is that the 10 day shows very warm weather right up towards the early part of March- kinda might ruin my in like a lamb out like a lion thingie bout Steel bein on a normal spawn--
Who knows perhaps the guys talking bout the light thing are more correct- know that is generally the rule with the Deer Rut too.
