river catfish

is there a secret to finding deep pools in rivers where catfish hang out without the use of electronics or a boat?

    Dry suit and a scuba tank . But seriously, that's a tall order. You can read the current to find suspected holes but other than that its just guessing really. I have a boat w fishfinder(no side scan) and from the surface there's really no way to tell. I've been cruising along in 20ft of water when all of a sudden it drops down to 40+ w no visible signs of it on the surface.

    Allegheny. From what I understand they dredged gravel or something in certain areas, the specific spot I'm talkin bout is just downstream from the halton bridge below lock 3. Very up and down bottom there w some small but very deep holes.

    I was fishing for eyes and smallmouth in south pittsburgh a year about and caught a few near a plant. They probably congregate near wherever warm water discharge is i would imagine
