I tied all these over the last few weeks.   I had multiple colors on the stone flies, but I gave my buddy a bunch and I lost a few this weekend.

Any changes to the stones that I should make.  How is the length of the tail out back and antenna , too long???

Are these good enough for the swap????

My favorite looking one I have tied is a red bead head, pink Estaz stone with black life cycle dubbing and a copper wrap. Like the blue one, but with antenna too.    No pic as I gave the 2 I had to my buddy.
P.S.   I have not caught anything on my stones yet, but I think  they would work.

Clint, they look fine. I'm sure when the  steel are on the color and the presentation is right they'll get bit.
Just some things to try. If you shorten the tails and antennae a little they'll be more durable and a little more realistic. You can also try putting on a thorax or wingcase cover. It allows  the flash to be shown from 1/2 the fly, rather than the whole front like an egg sucker . Subtle is sometimes good. Having both is good. Some flash and some realistic, duller patterns. Thanks for sharing. You are definately  in the swap.

Thanks Charlie, I thought the tails and antenna were too long.  I have been wondering about a wing cover.   what would I use for a wing cover, is it the stuff called swiss straw?

Count me in for the swap.

Looks like they will catch fish clint. Good job. I sometimes completely leave out the tail and antenna... I often make the tail with just straight hackle fibers as well as a wing casing and beard... I also often tie just a straight dubbed tapered body with a second step as a large dubbed head with no other color.... sometimes copper rib; sometimes not...etc.etc.etc.

What im trying to get at here is tie many variations... you will find some days one will work better than the others... good luck and keep up the good work

I like Clint. Unlike the others I make my tails a little long. I think they swim a little- add a little attraction plus you can cut them down a little on river.
The wire segments should be a little more uniform. Not picking, just mentioning.

Clint, swiss straw IS used as wing covers, but you can also use nymph skin,  6 mil black plastic, turkey biots (for small sizes), and any number of  wing feathers from pheasant, turkey, crow, etc. covered with a flexible coating and cut out. I make a bunch up at once by stretching out a nylon stocking  in a rack  (I staple it to a square rack) , place the feathers on the rack and coat with Dave's Flexament or Aquaseal thinned with a small amount of fingernail polish remover or acetone.  I put some of the coating on the nylon, stick the feather on it,  then coat the feather. When they dry completely, cut them off and you can now cut nice mottled wingcases out of them that are very realistic. One batch will last a few seasons worth. If you do a single wingcase like a mayfly nymph (even though stones have  more) you can just cut an uncoated section off a feather, tie it in,  put your dubbing or estaz in and pull the cover over the top and tie off. I then coat the wingcase with Sally Hansen HAN , or Flexament.
Lots of ways to skin the cat.

unless that is a bug that some old dude squeezed from it's shuck...

Fichy - that nylon trick is a great idea for high production #'s.

I use crow feathers for the wing case, they have a nice sheen to them. Plus it soothes my consience because I harvest a bit of the bird that fell from the sky.

Clint - them flies are nicer that the ones I tie - my excuse is tree-stump fingers.

I often just pull hackle fibers over the head. Its cheap and easy and you can do it in many different colors. When doing this I will usually do the tail in the same color...

Overall shape ,color, and size is what matters to the fish. All the fine details matters to the angler.Don't worry Clint those flies will work on a fish when they are looking for that overall shape, color, and size :)
