sw pa winter fishing condition updates

How's everything holding up? Any lakes iced over during this last cold snap? Streams blown out? Allegheny's at 12.58 ft and rising right now, I think that's a bit high to fish.Nice day tomorrow and I'm off work.

I haven't run into ice yet, except for in my rod guides. Fished the Mon the other day and it was flowing pretty good and slightly stained. It was like 18 degrees out so i only lasted about 45 min. Caught a couple trout since New Years Day, but no walleye yet, which is what im going after today!

I drilled a hole at High Point Lake this morning and the ice is 2 inches thick.  It was good clear ice with no snow on it.  Temperature around here is to be in the 40's though.

Drove across the Casselman River at 2 different places. It is open but running pretty fast.

My guess would be no. Especially, Highpoint.

by the end of next week i am predicting ice. the 15 day forcast has temps falling next week. it is going to be a little warm till next thursday the 12th. Then they are calling for highs in the 20's and lows in the single digits. Good ice will be here soon so no reason to push your luck before then

I agree. I think the guy was asking if Cranberry Glade and Highpoint will be "ice free" by Saturday...

Pay absolutely no attention to the Accuweather 15 day forecast...after about 5 days out it changes for every day past that by large degrees mostly!!!!....

It looked good to me.  There was some ice around the banks but I thought the color was good.  In no ways muddy or anything like that.  I crossed it in Garrett and Fort Hill.

For the person asking about High Point being ice free.  I'd guess not till sometime in March since it's solid now.

Thanks Dave. Yeah, 15 day forecast is wrong more often than not. Anybody drive past the Allegheny today? If its green I may fish it tomorrow. Assuming twin lakes and mammoth have skim ice, and snow melt blows out the loyalhanna

Yeah, I'm hoping to get out on the boat. Thought maybe the lake would loosen up with the sun today and 45 temp and sun predicted tomorrow. The ice on the ponds here is thin. thought the bigger lake would take longer. Is there any open water on either lake? Guess i'll have to wait till spring?

Thats a pretty cool weather site, checked it out, good fishing specifics, like the wind drift.

Well, Allegheny is on the way back up, and loyalhanna flow looks good. Anyone check any smaller sw pa lakes for ice yesterday? I haven't been out in a while. Have fun fishing in ur pool.

no ice here. i'm about7 miles from cranberry lake. currently the temps are in the mid 30's. the lake is a few hundred feet further above sea level than i am, but not far enough to have good ice. i still have open water on my bait pond. temps around 50 today. i'm not even unpacking my icefishing stuff. i don't think we're gonna get any this year.:(

Thanks for the tip. I was planning on heading out there Sunday morning. Nice weather tomorrow may make it fish-able by Sunday?

Yes Jeff...possible. I am trying again on Sunday. The wind and sun out there today should have made some sort of dent...the ice rim was slowly diminishing when I left about 2 pm....

I was at the upper today (Saturday) around 7a and 4-5p. It was locked up in the morning, but when I returned later the ice was breaking up and started roughly 10' from the shore. The ice was growing a couple major seams of open water as the sun went behind the trees. WIth any luck it may be clear tomorrow. After all the sun I thought it would have broken up more during the day. I imagine the wind had something to do with it.

Keystone appeared to have more accessible water. The dam to the velveeta hole had roughly 20-30' of open water before ice. I watched a football scooting across the ice (lengthwise of the lake) at a good clip.

Fished the Allegheny today, levels high but fishable. Think it was a bit sunny for walleye and didn't stick around til dark. But I did land my first musky. Only 22" but it made my day!(released unharmed)
