Keystone Lake
Anyone on here fish Keystone? I used to fish it all of the time when I was a kid, but I haven't been there in years. I'm really thinking about ice fishing it this year. It would be nice to hook up with someone who knows the lake and wouldn't mind helping me out.

Thanks for the reply. What were you catching by the breast? I've caught mostly trout there. Let me know when it has ice. I wanna try the "hump" and a few other hotspots I remember from back in the day.

Slabdaddy, I likewise used to fish KPD a lot back in the seventies and eighties. The lake sure has changed from then. I can honestly say I've never had a banner day through the ice. Usually catch some of the fall stocked trout and some small perch. Although my buddy managed to catch a 32" muskie through the ice a few years back. I think I need to try different areas from where I usually fish open water. The "hump" I presume is the island that exposes itself at low water. I think I'd try up the lake another 100 yds or so where the deep basin lies. I think it's a possiblity for suspended crappies since they tend to migrate in to the "farmers pond area" in the spring. But just a warning to be careful in that area because it's the last to freeze. I've been on it with 9" at the launch and only 2" out in the middle! Talk about a cheap thrill. Maybe we can hook up sometime. Lou

I would love to hook up sometime. As soon as the ice is on, we'll set something up. Where are you from? I live in New Bethlehem. It's about 15mi north of Kittanning on Rt66. Keep in touch. I'm always up for going with someone new. I still have alot to learn about ice fishing. I do pretty well on open water, but I'm fairly new to the ice. They were about 24 to 30 inches and missed one about 40 and I said I never caught them out of the river I caught them trolling with the second smallest size xrap in perch color.

I know that KPD has some nice muskies. A friend of mine and his dad caught 5 in one day down there during the Memorial Day weekend. They weren't big ones, but they were muskies! I was hoping to find someone on here that icefishes it regularly that wouldn't mind hooking up with me. I want some crappie.

Slab, As the name indicates, I'm from Indiana,Pa. KPD is about 22 miles for me. I drove past it the other day because we muzzle load up around Rural Valley. The lake is full with water going over the spillway, unfortunately no ice. The week before there was some skim ice in the various bays. Then those warm temperatures killed all of that. So the water is right at freezing and should start to reform pretty quick. But again, the middle takes a long time to freeze to a safe depth. Keep in touch and we can hook up for an outing. I'm retired but work in the construction field and can pretty much set my own schedule. Lou

Thanks Lou. I'm hoping to go out and get a doe with my flintlock on Saturday. I need a couple in the freezer and I always save my tags for muzzleloader. I really appreciate the update. I'm a little depressed to hear that there is absolutely no ice...LOL! Oh well. Hopefully these really cold nights will get the job done. It's been so long since I've been on Keystone, I'm just excited to get back out on it. Never fished it through the ice, only open water. I've caught some huge crappie down there.

Does anybody know how deep the lake at keystone state park gets? I've only been there a few times and I plan on fishing there more frequently this year. I'm not too familiar with it, also if you have any tips on where to fish and what to look for on the lake please share!

I believe the max depth is about 30'. If you want to catch trout, the shoreline by the main launch is good.

I've never had what I'd call a great day there, but before I started runnin the streams, there were a few years where I covered that lake about as thoroughly as a guy from shore can manage. Pursuing trout, bass, and panfish, I always seemed to do better on the side opposite the dam, near the bridge. Bait on the bottom in the early spring for trout, mini tubes and jigs for crappie, and small spinnerbaits and soft plastics for bass. Try to find 'features' like points, weed beds, any kind of ledge or trough...doesn't take a major change, just something a little different than open flat water. Never got nothing real huge, though, either, so take that for what you will.

Isn't there a "Blue Navy" base there? I've only fished it a couple of times, not real anxious to go back, only smalls and darn few of them.
