I would so love to go, but I have to work.   Even though most of the hospital is closed my boss found a way around  any time off for our department this year for Christmas and New Years.  I even had to work yesterday and will have to work New Years day.

I always enjoyed fishing the day after christmas; its been a while though... john im psyched for next week man; based on the weather its looking like the flow may drop by next week though... do you still float in 335? Im looking to bring a noodle with a spin reel ready to either bottom bounce or float with; also gonna bring my 7 weight switch and maybe a spey for the heck of it... also gonna tie up a bunch of flies...mostly natural nymphs due to the water temps and levels dropping... as I said man... psyched... hope someone takes you up on tomorrows float... later

Fichy: I will have your flies I owe you if you're up next weekend; I should be up Thursday or friday

Dime 335 not a problem and considering the day were fishing should be able to pick our spots. We can fish however we want, Ill use whatever they will take. It should be a good day. Im fishing on the kids wii, bass but hey Ill take anything fishy now. Clint, was hoping you were gonna be the guy, seeing your location and all. Was a time my buds couldnt get enough of this stuff, maybe some do grow up, or get boring. Fishing till it hurts, maybe longer.

Man id love to even just hit some gills on a noodle at this point... its been close to 3 months since I touched a fishing rod...going nuts... actually more like insane... let's see; missed an epic coho run (well, I was up while they were running but i was busy screwing down steel roofing...)and then I missed one of the best fall runs for chrome in years.... rt; I like your resolution for picking up garbage; but I think I've decided that my resolution is to hit the water enough this winter and spring to make up for my fishless fall...

Cought 2 8inchers, depressing missed like three other hits, to fast on the set. Oh well they were fish, looking forward to next weekend already, hope the rain/snow this week is enough to keep the release around 500. Hope someone got out today should have been a slammer of a day!

3 fan, we were there- had we known would have loved to go instead of rollcasting underneath  and out of the trees all day. I did well  for being stuck in one little hole- boat would have rocked.  If it drops for next weekend it will be easier on us non-floating types. Dime, I haven't done squat with small nymphs and have found only one guy who has.  Don't neglect fishing estaz eggs and egg sucking leeches and buggers, this is not a normal year, fish aren't into winter mode yet it seems. I got hit on the swing a number of times today.

Charlie thanks for the heads up... it would make sense that their not in winter mode yet... i imagine theres still some brownie, rainbow, and coho eggs getting mixed up through out the river... regardless; still gonna tie up a bunch of size 8 and 10 nymphs... also gonna spin up a bunch of estaz as well...things can change really fast this time of year. Hopefully the weather holds up and allows ground and surface water to fill the res and river. I do notice some nights in the 10's and teens coming up though... we will see

Hey,were The fish you hit on the swing with big streamers? Great to hear you had another banner day...

Dime, by small, I thought you meant 14 and 16's . 8 and 10 will produce. It's the little  winter stone/caddis larvae I thought you meant. I had some excellent days this time last year on small caddis larvae patterns. There was shelf ice and single digits, too.  They were hitting 6's. I tried one  large bunny fly, but only at the end of the day for me when things had really slowed down. 3 fan would have hammered 'em with plugs today. Still some late run Cohos around. Saw 2 hooked today.

Usually - when the snow covered riverbanks are covered with stone flies - it is GO TIME.

Hard to see them without any SNOW..

Hopefully SNOW will come, as well as a January Thaw.

    Strange Year Indeed.

Hey charlie; I usually don't go smaller than 12; but I tie some more sparse and shorter on the shank if my desire is to be smaller. Definitely a funny year but not the first... i imagine the strictly "swing" guys are thrilled...would imagine we may see cohoes in to april this year if things keep going the way they are... im surprised 3 fan hasn't gotten one on a plug yet. 2 years ago I saw a guide get 2 in mid january on plugs just below the trestle... im hoping to hit the lower river as well this weekend. Being that the fish are still hot and fresh up river; can't imagine what the honey holes down low have in store ;)

Drake, my favorite fly for imitating LWS's  I tie from CROW feathers.    The nice black shiny  feathers make great folded wings or overwings, or thorax covers.

Fichy, you dont know how bummed I was I didnt get up there yesterday, I would have plugged and hammered them. Finally found someone to go but by then way to late. Dime have not cought a coho since late october and it was on plugs, got a big hen king that day also. As for seeing any fresh ones I usually get to fish at least one day a week, sometimes two and have not seen or caught one. Did however see quite a few in the hatchery ladder two weeks ago. Maybe sunday, maybe on a plug rod!

I use them from time to time.

have you ever used porcupine hair?
I heard it was a prized possession among some fly tiers.
Never used it, but I blasted a porky last week while hunting yotes and thought about harvesting some hair from it - but didn't want to mess with picking hair from between the quills. I heard it sells for big bucks in the flyshops.

Drake, I have used the quills to tie extended body mayflies. I don't have many big drake hatches around me, so I don't tie very many. The guard hair is supposedly very good for tails and legs, being long, tapered and durable. I imagine you have to de-quill alot of the pincushion to get enough to make it worth  your while. I think alot of the supply in flyshops comes as a by-product from indian cultures that make ceremonial clothing and art objects with the quills.
