New meaing for a double

This is a new meaning to a double. While fishing Monday, I had a hookup while talking with my wife on the cell. After hanging up and starting to fight the steelhead, I looked up stream and saw my neighbor standing in chest deep water with his hands in the air. He yelled for me to grab his line as it went by. He had a steelhead on that took him to his backing and the line immediately came loose. As you can guess, as I grabbed his line (in right hand) mine started to run directly at me (why rod is straight up in left hand). Surprisingly, I was able to walk back in with both fish and he landed his hand over hand while I landed mine the traditional way. It was a good finish to a day that started with throwing a frozen rope for the first few hours.

Its better than a Russian waiving to his family that there are 30 fish in a hole.

The problem was where he was standing in the creek and the depth of the water. He just made the mistake of pointing his rod in the direction the fish was running and wasn't trying to move for fear of slipping. This is the first time he ever saw the backing.

Sounds to me like your neighbor should hook them in the mouth.

Funny, I was with a guy on the Catt. a couple of years ago and he hooked into a fish in fast water. Down stream it went instead of tighting the drag and breaking it off he let it run and run untill there went the line and backing back towards the lake. A fish that was going to be put back for a $60. line and backing. I just shook my head and ask him if the drag worked on that reel?

There will be days when fishing is better than ones optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home.

Doesn't anyone tie their backing anymore?

Albright knot for backing. Coat with Loon UV. Nail knots for backing connections are not as strong and I do not trust them. 50 lb super braid is great for backing, fine diam., strong, and will not deteriorate with age. Have been into the backing on the Catt a few times, same for the lake.

Good point Bob. Have your knots right and there is no reason for losing your line.  Don,t use 8lb. for backing...lol
