New Motor

I'm looking to buy a new motor. Do I get a 20hp 4stroke or a 25hp 2 stroke and make it look legal? I hate the horse power restrictions!

4 stroke, you won't look back...

4 stroke is heavier probably, might get better performance from the 2 stroke but you don't have to mix gas for the 4, just depends on what your main use is...

You will be hard pressed to find a new 20hp two-stroke. Their are plenty of used ones floating around, but I believe all the big outboard mfgs- Merc, Yamaha, Tohatsu, Honda, etc have dropped the small 2-stroke models from their line-ups.

I think Evinrude offers their E-Tec motor [2-stroke] in a 15 hp model, but I think this particular engine is geared for use as a kicker motor.

It seems like big brother wants to phase out all 2-stroke engines and force everyone to go to 4-stroke technology. It seems like mostly BS to me, because all the D.I. two-stroke engines are just as fuel efficient if not more than their 4-stroke counterparts.

do you think I could get away with a tohatsu or yamaha 25 marked as a 15 or 20? I fish the 3 rivers and do not want to give up the little speed that i have. I also love to fish all the 20hp lakes up north, as of now i can only troll. Stupid PA laws...

I have heard that they are starting to check motors for hp. There was a time that 9.9s and 15s were basically the same motor but we went through a spell where guys were getting the 25 mercs and badging them as 20s but they are a lot bigger. I would just stay with the 20, but it's up to you if you want to roll the dice. Could end up with a fine and a motor you can't use.

    There's a decent looking Honda 20 fourstroke on pennswoods.net

If you want to fish the 20hp lakes, and not have to look over your shoulder every time the man is on the water, get the 20. If you get caught with a bigger motor, don't complain about it. YOU know what you're doing is wrong. And after reading this board for so many years, it's a fact that someone with the WCO's number will call and turn you in.

I have a tracker PT175, about 17 feet. I'm sure someone will call, because they have nothing better to do. Although I have done nothing wrong as of yet, just talking it out with some fellow fishing friends. 20hp four stroke seems logical and smart choice. State law should be a speed limit not a HP limit. Just my input.

You're preachin' to the choir there!  My 135hp at 1000 rpm's throws a smaller wake than my 20hp at WOT!
