I'll take 1000 cfs all winter long.... finally some typical november water flows... 1000 cfs opens up a lot of secret spots that get overlooked plus it keeps the crowds down. Perfect water level for bigger flies or even rapalas along undercut banks....in case anyone didn't notice I LOVE 1000 CFS...LOL...

Startin to get old and forgetful- is this the first time this year the river has come up this far?? Personally like bout 6 to 9 hundred but will love the chance for freshies on 1000 if need be. Used to like 1000 but dont trust myself wading out there as much as the old days.

Dam, I pick lousy times to show up!!!!!!! Bet by 12/10 it'll be down to 335 and 60 again. Have a great trip Trev! Nothing like pickin' em off right under the rod tip. Lots of banks and close seams become major fish holders. They won't be out hiding in the heavy water like they have been lately. Dime, can you cross to the south side of the Joss at 1,000? Charlie

When HT and I were fishing togeather mid October it got to 1000 for a day or two, then they dropped it to 750 from what I remember. Just checked the Erie tribs in fantasyland and they are blown, but the long range forecast looks favorable for my trip out there next week:)

Thanks, HT. I like that hole, seems like it would rock for steel. I think I'd skip 1500 though. It was about 750 dropping to 500 when we were there the first time? I might try it once this winter just to see how it is. Charlie

Charlie be sure to cross well above the head... I like to start crossing upstream from the island on a diagonal and aim to hit the other bank about 50 yards plus or minus downstream from the head of the island.... hope this helps...

The thing is to find a season pass holder who does not use their 2 comp passes.. As for the whole SR scene.. I know big trout (still call steelhead trout) are great fun and what keeps me going but I'm getting bored, going broke and just plain tired of all these down sized (cutter) Great Lakes trout and the B.S. that surrounds.. A new reg here a snagger there, it's just stupid or maybe I'm just dumb and don't get it. After 30 years of catching and helping others I tend to see the tribs on a steep decline towards my fishing destination. There are some nice comparable trout swimming less crowded and crazy waters in NY.. Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right Peace & Tuna

Heading up in the AM , I do not think I have ever seen 1000 ,, so this will be different for sure .. seems like everytime I go up something is significantly different. Thinking maybe I should have just stuck with my Feburary only routine like I have done for years ,,, just kidding, Having all these changes makes it more difficult as once you think you have a handle on it , it changes but that is what makes it fun.

Funny you say that tuna... between my brother father and myself we have 6 comp passes and they rarely ever get used... I used 2 on a buddy of mine last year... charlie; you'd be surprised when crossing below the tail of the joss as well; its a little bit of a fight up stream in higher water but I always did it back in the day... it has been a while but I don't think its changed that much.... the water really spreads out down there below the island.... it may look deceiving getting around the cliff in the head of the joss but I've gotten by in 2500 cfs.... you'd also be surprised at the action you can have from the north bank side.... the head of the pool from the north bank is limited to bottom bouncing, bobber, strike indy or chuck and duck.... there is quite an under cut in the slate though that can hold many fish.... same methods will apply to just about mid pool from the north side; but from mid belly to the tail out you can do a nice single hand spey and either dead drift or even swing a fly.... hope this helps and hope to fish the joss with you this winter.... it is my favorite hole over time and I've had my best days both steel and salmon there.... it hasn't gotten much attention from me in recent years; but my heart still rests there.... I always loved the mid february hikes down there when it would finally free up during a cold snowy winter... 8 foot wind blown snow banks of untouched snow and the flat water downstream is just a wall of ice that the river just disappears under... on days like this; fishing was secondary to say the least....

Charlie; id like to think that i'll make a december trip or 2... for january and february id hope to make 3 trips...but I have much going on right now and I can't commit to anything at the moment... id like to think sometime end of january through mid february we can hook up. There's usually a decent thaw period within those 3 weeks and fishing can be on fire... as the time gets closer let's keep in touch and even if its ice out conditions down low we can always drift some nymphs up top...

hey db, do you think you will make the break even point of 11 trips to dsr this year ? after the 08 >09 crash I just never seemed to grasp the fact of making the breaking point for me down there any longer.. it has always been my salmon area more so then trout , reason for letting someone else have a shot.. not saying you should give up but just rational thinking.. now im trying to justify the whole shebang of why i continue even going.

ORIGINAL: hot tuna hey db, do you think you will make the break even point of 11 trips to dsr this year ? good question HT.. speaking in a strictly financial manner: DB - if you have an agressive accountant (like me - that viciously defends his clients interests against the big evil IRS & El Bobo the Socialist Clown), I would strongly recommend that you, your Dad, or your Bro take at least one of your construction clients on a fishy trip to the DSR) - end result would be a total writeoff of your DSR annual passes against your business for tax purposes). just thought I would toss out a year-end tax planning tip for ya. it's still money out of your pocket, but it would be partially subsidized by Uncle Sam - even though you are small biz, you gotta think big like the oil companies ). later d00d.

Hey tuna I already have 7 days in dsr at this point... I don't see how I wont brake even... usually I've more than broke even at this point.... some years id been well over 20 or even up to 30 at this point... With that being said; there's still december through may 9th...don't see how I wont.... the last 2 years I've gone right up until closing time... either way im not giving it up; too good of a time for salmon early on and the steel is phenomenal for most of the season. for the 450 I spend in the summer for it; its never been muc h skin off my back...its less than a dollar saved a day if you think about it.... Drake, thanks for the advice... I've thought of taking clients up but its hard enough to squeeze my time in and most of my clients are even busier than me.... I do have intentions of taking a few guys who are brothers that I work for and doing a drift boat.... as you said, its still money out of my pocket ; but with some leniency from uncle Sam.... on another note; a lot of people are either misinformed or just misunderstanding of the whole "write off" thing... as you said its still money out of your pocket... I had a friend who was convinced that you get all of your write off money back from the government... it took me 20 minutrsor to explain the concept to him...lmao.... Needless to say its tough times and a tough year; well; tough 3 years...the past month I've been like one of those yotes you've been hunting for trying scrounge up some work for the winter... with some blood sweat and tears and a daily fox hole prayer; I think my efforts may prevail... Drake: will this one qualify me for the novel peace prize maybe???? Koombay(yeeeeehhhhh)aaaaaaaaaaa

Hysterical metal; there I was thinking in terms of a cup of coffee a day but went with the dollar instead at; the last minute....cut me some slack though; it was 5 am... lol... On a side note I am quadruple checking a proposal for the 5th time as we speak.... complete fire suppression and plumbing for a brand new school from the ground up; needless to say; they try to teach the kn owledge and know how in school for this, but for anyone in the know; the knowledge comes from experience and natural intelligence :) You can give yourself a pat on the back for catching me on that easy one ;)

Geez Dime, bidding something like that is an art form, not something picked up in a classroom. Besides the Joisey graft, illegals, code books larger than an encyclopedia, and dealing with every little petty official ever invented, you need to know LOTS to factor in things like material increases and the UNFORSEEN, otherwise known as architects and engineers. I stayed small because I can't do it. Best of luck and another prayer thrown in the foxhole for ya. I just hired another contractor to work with me- we're the same age, drive the same truck, do the same type projects, but he's willing to work for 60% of what I'm making because I have work and he doesn't. He's happy as a clam to have the work. Having grown up in Joisey, alot of the places I fished as a kid are now under parking lots and run into storm sewers. Don't take for granted that the great memories you have as a kid will hang around forever. If I was in your shoes, I'd be buying a season pass, too. I hope you get to pass it on to your children. Charlie

Besides being a old fart and not really needing to do it anymore I quit the building rat race because in times like this there seems to be always someone that'll do it cheaper than you, sometimes below cost.Good luck on that bid dime and I hope you can actually make a profit if you get it.

guys, thanks for your thoughts and prayers charlie; we do big and small; and always have... the big stuff is good steady work when awarded, but at the same time, you can never forget about the small stuff and service; thats the mistake a lot of guys make when they go for the big... glad to hear you got some good help... btw; putting out a number today on an 8000 square foot home thats framed and ready to start... 35 plumbing fixtures and radiant throughout the whole house along with 2- 75000 btu hydronic coils in 2 air handlers... this is an absolute dream job... needless to say another prayer wont hurt ... metal; thanks for the good luck wish jack... construction game is a rat race; at this point its all ive got... and you are 100% correct; i get beat out all the time by other guys who are coming in under my cost figures... maybe thats why everyday someone else is going out of business... at this point it comes down to the strongest/most knowledgeable will survive... now; clint:get out there and do some more fishing so we dont get off topic like this lol

Clint looking forward to your reports.... don't hesitate to swing some bigger streamers in the tailouts and flat waters/small riffles....with the water up and still in the 40's its very likely you'll get one to strike on the swing...good luck where ever and however you pursue your steel...
