HELP!!!
would anyone be kind enough to update me how the streams are looking and how high they are? my buddy and I have no idea wether to make the 2 hour drive up tomorrow. and how you think they'll be by morning? thanks all!!

just check the gauges and go to unclejohnselkcreek.com and look at the live cam, then you will not have to ask on here anymore cause most guys will give u a smart a@# answer.

Check out this link for the Walnut Creek water gauge: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/pa/nwis/uv/?site_no=04213152&PARAmeter_cd=00065,00060,00010 As I type this, the flow is about 500 CFS and the gauge height is 5 feet. Before the rain started it was at about 3.5 ' and 20 CFS. Right now, I wouldn't even consider fishing Walnut or Elk, but there are plenty of other streams that will be in excellent shape by late afternoon, and certainly by tomorrow, without any more significant rainfall. Everybody has different preferences. Elk and Walnut are "fishable" to me when the Walnut gauge is at about 200 CFS and dropping. When it gets down around 120 CFS, it's usually about prime - good flow, some visibility. Below 75 CFS, you're getting into low and clear conditions. But even then that doesn't always give the whole picture. Without much more rain today, I'd definitely make the 2 hour drive tomorrow.

Elk and Walnut are "fishable" to me when the Walnut gauge is at about 200 CFS and dropping. When it gets down around 120 CFS, it's usually about prime - good flow, some visibility. Below 75 CFS, you're getting into low and clear conditions. Using the Walnut gauge I think Walnut is "fishable" at a higher CFS than ELK. Your numbers seem to be right on for Walnut for what I like. Elk I feel is usually "fishable" a little lower at 120CFS and dropping, with 70 - 90CFS being prime for my taste, and less than 40CFS being low and clear.

So if I am thinking of making the 6 hour drive and want to check the charts. Do I check Walnut or Elk or does it matter as long as I know what are the good flows are for one or another. I guess you also need to consider where on the stream relative to the lake you will be fishing. If I sound like a greenhorn I am forgive me.

There is no gauge for Elk, but there is one for Brandy Run, a trib of Elk. However I usually don't look at it.
As steelslayer said, Elk usually takes a little longer to come down than Walnut, so judge accordingly. If you're coming from 6 hours away and plan your trips in advance you would do well to familiarize yourself with upper sections of Elk and Walnut, as well as many of the other tribs, as they can be fishable when lower sections of Elk and Walnut aren't and you can't cancel a trip. There are some places in Erie - including the lake and bay and smaller tribs - where you can find good numbers of fish when Elk and Walnut are blown out.

Thanks. I am heading up tomorrow after work to Fish Thur/Fri and maybe Sat morning if I don't bear hunt. I'll be by myself and plan on doing a little exploring instead of hitting the same old spots where I am sure there will be plenty of company.

I have used the brandy run gauge to judge elk creek for years, but since its come back on-line I'm not confident that the readings are exactly comparable to years gone by. I always believed that Elk was prime (not withstanding turbidity) when it was between 5cfs and 11cfs, though it can be fishable on the the other sides this range.

I think the Walnut CFS gauge is much better for judging Elk than the Brandy run gauge, I never use Brandy run. You have a much bigger scale to work with on the Walnut gauge, it's consistent for Elk, and the watersheds of the two creeks are only about 3 miles apart.

I think most of us know you can catch fish and have caught fish when the water is brown. Some people prefer to take vacation days off of work only when the water is not brown and raging.

Smaller tribs should fish well tomorrow looking at the gauge currently. Elk will be good by mid afternoon barring any type of significant rain between now and then.

I don't care if the water is up 5 feet I can still catch fish in it, just change up your tactics. But the last few days have been some of the finest fishing of the year so far
