Steelhead!! - Ye-Haa! Salmon River!!!

Lots of steelies top to bottom of the S.R.
99% are in the faster water - heat.
2-6 feet of rippled or fast water. (current breaks)
-
Many Steel anglers are fishing the deeper pools - slow water.
You may get lucky and hook a couple or none in these normal Winter lyes.
These fish dont move into these Winter lyes until the water temp. drops a lot more.
Stay w/ the above suggested waters for best results :)
-
Personnally, I cant remember when Ive seen so many nice, solid colored Salmon at this time of year. 50% old, but 50% a nice solid fresher colored, hard fighting fish!!
-
Presently, we have 50% Salmon anglers and the same w/ new Steelhead anglers out and about.
-
Some are doing incredible and some not. Thats fishing :)
Best of luck to you all!!
Randy

P.S. The Pinneville bridge just opened up yesterday. It is really nice!
They have a sidewalk accross, and even a sidewalk down to the river.

Hi Randy, yes indeed there are lots of fresh, hard fighting, Kings present this late in the season, played with a couple this week. That warm weather set the run back a week or two is my guess.

Yup, never seen this many nice Salmon this late.
It's funny, your fishing for steel, and hook a nice 20 lb. Salmon.
How do you (TRY) to land one of these on lighter Steel..  lines?
    Always fun!

Great info, Randy. Thanks. That tip on them being asleep in the deep is spot on.  You can save people lots of wasted time with that . Very good of you to share that kind of knowledge.

A small correction on my part.
Transitionally speaking, there will always be some moving up river and resting in some of the slower water, resting, before moving further up and holding in the ripples, fast'r water current break's presently, due to water temp. and airation.
    -
Once these water temp's drop, they will hold in the deeper - slower water spots. To conserve energy.
    -
Presently, as usual, you can find them in both transitional and holding waters. Sooo, the entire river could tie you into some nice Chrome!
    Best of luck!
    Randy

P.S. with the recent higher water flows, it just sent a bunch of freshies up! Ending up on your line shortly :)

Randy, was plugging schoolhouse hole yesterday morning and hit two fresh salmon on hotshots. Coho beautifully lit up and a huge hen king with her eggs still high and tight. Steelhead was just on fire yesterday, what a great day to be fishing wish I was there now! Also great advice on the water. Tight Lines

I was up Pulaski NY from Oct 6 - Oct 23. I landed 31 salmon total and my first Steelie. My best King was 27lbs and my Steelie was 11 1/2lbs. I generally fished behind the Salmon River Museum and, I was lucky in re the water level. Of course, there were the ignorant folks showing up, determined to screw up a good trip. Once they saw me get into fish, they tried to take over my space. I could see the run slowing by the 19th. I even went down to the Hatchery and, you could see that there were less fish returning. Those I caught were fresh and, they were fighters. One took me [20] minuets to land and, a angler told me he fought [4] fish while I was dueling with that one. This was probably one of my top trips to the Salmon River. I'm already tying off leaders for next Oct.
