Today 10/16

First fly fishing only day for me with my new gear and only fishing for Steel and Browns.   I only fished fast water riffles and tail outs.   Walked from the trestle south side almost to Pineville.  I fished in quite a few spots  away from the crowds and holes.  Almost  had a heart attack climbing the big hill with the rope.   Salmon were abundant and I saw plenty taken.   Saw 1 steel rise and a few small browns.   I did not even get one sniff of a hit today and from talking to a few folks neither were they.  A couple had hits on egg sacks, but none landed.   I was fishing glow bug eggs (pink, green, orange and some combo's of those colors)  on #10, some wooly boogers (brown, black and purple), a few streamers and even pegged a bead for a few swings after I broke my tippet off.   Since it was my first day I had high hopes , but low expectations for catching.   Stopped at the compactor and fished by the bridge for 1/2 hour again no takers.  Saw 1 steel on a stringer and plenty sharks.   Crowds are dying down a bit for the most part.  Will try again next weekend.    

It was.   Even a day with no action is by far better than on at work or just sitting at home watching tv.

    Used some popsicles last week upriver and watched as the Kings and Hos shied away from them- tried different color combos inc red blue and pink - no go.
  They were mostly #1 & #2 Hooks. Went down to #6 and 8 and a bit darker with some sparkle and watched the fish hit them. Also saw some folks hav eluck with pink eggs but had no go on them myself. course when I used them in the pm the Steel had already passed an no one was hooking them up. the Hos and Kings both seemed to like the green and or blue colors that day with a bit of red on the head.

stick with black or brown....they dont see em or run away from them therefore you are much more likely to hook a salmon....forget the big gaudy stuff, they have already been ripped 100 times by them!
