OMG --- OUCH !!!!

I received this E-mail today ===

Picture (below) is gruesome. ………….

This photo was taken on a cell phone last week after the guy took his friend to Bass Pro Shop to buy his first bow. The clerk was 'assisting' him in zeroing it in, and, after shooting several arrows, making adjustments etc., the clerk accidentally handed him an arrow that was too short. When he drew back, the arrow tip fell down onto his hand and he somehow released it. They rode to the hospital with the bow in his buddy's hand.

They are both archery amateurs (I'm thinking the clerk is also?). I don't think the guy who got shot ever had held a bow prior, let alone shot one...OUCH!

And that right there is why you go to a pro shop.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

If that were a crossbow, he'd certainly have no left thumb.

That is the #1 thing the owner of the archery shop where I got my crossbow told me MANY times.. that is a mistake a crossbow hunter will make ONLY ONCE.....

#2 was to watch where the limbs are on BOTH SIDES .. they are horizontal and thus take more space to clear any obstructions....

IMHO this guy has no need to be hunting PERIOD !!!!

I know a fellow that shot at a deer out of a treestand with a crossbow.  Thought he had enough clearance between the crossbow's limb and the tree.  He didn't.  At the shot, the limb hit the tree trunk sending the stock of the crossbow recoiling into his face and out of the treestand he went.  Safety harness may have saved his life.

A little harsh, don't you think? He was new to archery hunting and kind of depending on the store clerk to show him what to do....not his fault he was handed a short arrow, he probably didn't know what to look for.

I do know, if it were me, I'd have cut that little flap of skin off my finger tip so I could have removed the bow from my grip.

Hope he is alright....looks like it hopefully missed the bone in his thumb and just got the meat. If there are no infections, he should be good to go in a couple weeks!

eyes.. you are right that was a little harsh ...sorry..

I guess I should be more upset with the clerk...

    oh well

I agree == I hope he is alright and will not hold the experiecne against the sport of hunting in anyway and will still give archery season a try.... It's till a GREAT time of the year.. except maybe these past few days.. raining like "cats and dogs" outside all morning here...........

I'd back off and let this guy bed down. Give him time. If you push him too soon, he'll run and you'll never recover him.

Probably stick to the fields though, be awful tough to run through the brush with that hand stuck around the handle like that.

Better too far back, than too far forward.
