Yak fishin

Just wonderin if anyone around Erie fishes from a kayak ever. I am new to kayaking and kayak fishing but have enjoyed it so far. Was ahoping to find others in the area who love it as well. Otherwise, I am stuck casting from shore...

not in the creeks. you can fish back in teh lagoons on PI or even in the bay. I'd be a little leary taking it out on the lake.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.

+1 - get caught in a little wind and you could end up in Canada, or worse Ohio....

I had asked this a few years back, but never attempted. I ended up buying a larger boat, and rarely ever use my kayak now (also live about 2 hours from Erie). What I found out, was you really need to keep an eye and ear on the weather, since it changes pretty quickly. Guys fish the mouths of the creeks in float tubes, so a kayak is probably safer IMO. Same deal with guys fishing the oceans & much larger waters in yaks (many dissapear though...). Just make sure you are out far enough to not be in casting range of those on shore, if planning to fish the mouths during steelhead season. If they aren't catching fish, some neandrathals will certainly try to hook up with you...

Getting a handheld marine radio would not be a bad idea either.

It all depends on what kind of kayak you have.  Check out this one that my parents bought to use in Hawaii.  It has catamarans, a sail, foot peddles, and an electric motor that we didn't even use.  I wouldn't hesitate to take it out on lake Erie.  We were using it in the ocean and slicing right through pretty decent swells while sailing, it was stable as hell.  Definitely need to take all the safety precautions though when on a large body of water.

It's one of them tropical steelhead, and I caught him south of rt 5.  Actually it's a small giant trevally, which I guess is like the complete opposite of a jumbo shrimp.

Here is what a big GT looks like, I have no idea who these guys are.  I'm sure this beast would have spooled my spinning gear.  That little guy though fought just as hard as any NY King I've ever had hooked up.

I use mine in the PI Bay a bunch. I've never had it out in the lake, although I'd like to try off the mouth on a flat day for steelhead. It is a ton of fun fishing out of though.

It looks like this coming Friday will offer ideal conditions to venture out into the lake on a yak.  Please take plenty of pictures if you go

.FRIDAY...WEST WINDS TO 30 KNOTS BECOMING NORTHWEST IN THE AFTERNOON. RAIN SHOWERS LIKELY. WAVES 9 TO 12 FEET.

If you guys are serious about fishing larger bodies of water in your yak, having catamarans on the sides really helps the stability allot and makes it virtually impossible to tip over.  If you don't have mounts for them on your yak already, you can buy the mounts from ocean or hobie and have them put on just about any brand.

I'd probably stay in during the rain and 9 - 12 foot waves.  But the first day I was out in the ocean on that hobie, there were pretty decent winds and 4 - 6 foot waves.   Didn't catch any fish that day and got wet the whole time, but it was pretty darn fun.

been kayak fishing for some years now from, everything from smallies in white water to being miles out in the ocean . rescently we got in to landbased shark fishing where we use or yaks to paddle baits out upwards of 600+yards. we have always wanted to fish the mouths for chromers in the lake been saying it for atleast three years. i think this year in the next couple weeks or so we might try it. like said before just have to watch the weather, not worred about rain just the wind and from what direction this will detemine the swell.like 99% of thing's in life just use commen sense, if it looks rough from shore then it's even worse when you get out there. know your boat and skill, what it and you can handle. like most i have had some SCARY moments in my yak from fliping over in a class 3 loaded down with camping gear and riding my yak upside down thru the rapid. to be towed out in the ocean from a monster chopper blue, that it took over an hr and half to get back to the beach and seeing larg dorsal fins break the surface around me draging the fish back. good luck i think if you find them your arms will be soar in no time. if we do make it up i'll pm you, kinda hard with the two hr drive from the burgh. tight lines moose

I did this about 4 years ago in Avon, NC. They talk about doing it for cobia at the point, so figured I'd give it a try. We went about twice the length of the Avon pier. Only issue was running out of line on the reels... We only ended up with a skate, which took forever to reel in all of the line.

Someone here used to post about doing that in, I think, Texas, very cool stuff. Links to pictures and everything, I remember checking them out. Was it Mr. Tax Rocks? I don't remember who it was.

I think it was Eyes & Taxrocks.

His buddie, I think actually fished for sharks directly from the yaks too. I'm fine paddling a fish head, hook and weight out, but trying to pull a shark onto the kayak with me, isn't happening. I almost cut the line one time, when I thought that I had a musky, but ended up being a big channel cat.

My rule of thumb when yak fishing in the ocean is that if the fish is as big or bigger than the yak, then the line is getting cut at first sight.  I always have an extra spool of line and a spear on board.  Catching small sharks is one thing, but Tiger sharks are aggressive and can get up to 2,000 lbs!

I used to fish Assateaque a long time ago. We would camp in Chincoteague at a friends trailer at Tom's Cove. This was back when it was still just a little fishing village and not too long after the book Misty came out.

    Guilty as charged.

A local outdoor writer actually did an article about my buddy and I and I got my ugly mug (actually, the back of my head, the better part), in the magazine.
