Lampreys

On the few fish I saw on one of the east side tribs, I saw more lampreys than I've seen total in the last 9 years. Anyone else notice this, or have any idea why?

I was told the fish commission stopped poisoning them in the streams for several years now to control them but were going to resume. don't know how factual this is. anyone else hear this?

I've seen quite a few fish caught this year and haven't seen one with scars.

When we were chucking spoons in the lake last weekend, a steel swam by me with the longest lamprey i've ever seen attached to its side. The steel was roughly 25" and the lamprey was all of 20"

I seen 3 lampreys just yesterday while i was fishing walnut. Two were dead and about around 16" and the other was on the side of the fish. I also seen a mark on the one steel i caught. Ed

I hooked 7 today and brought 3 to hand, One I lost had a lamprey still attached to it,wish I could have landed that one so I could kill the lamprey. Of the 3 I landed there was 2 spots on the one fish. As far as Im concerned thats way to many on fish and with the one still attached to a fish makes it even worse. If you get the chance to kill them just do it.

Killed one last night that someone else landed and had no idea what to do with it, couple curb stomps and then a slash to the head did the job.

I saw 4 yesterday attached. Two were about that long. At first I thought it was another fish until I saw them closer.

i remember back in the late 50s us kids would go down to walnut (where the millcreek mall is now )and see them every where they would be in the creek and 5-7 of them would be attached to a flat rock. we would stone em with rocks but they were every where. After the put that lampreycide in the creeks that took care of alot of them but it needs to be done again and i havent heard any reports of it happening.

any day of fishing is a gift
