FLoat???

I have been noticing a large number of fly fisherman using some sort of float that looks like some sort of puffy sponge, kinda of looks like a cross between a badminton birdie and a sponge.  Can someone tell me what these are and the benefit of these types of floats.  I noticed because they were slaying the steelhead. It looks like it slowed the line down.  Any help would be appreciated.

They are called strike indicators and they do just what the name says, and I'll bet the use of the "float" had little to do with the fishing success.

I've never used that type, but its just a matter of preference.  You can get them at any fly shop.
