Detergent spills into second Western Pa. river Staff & Wire Reports

PITTSBURGH - State environmental officials say the same kind of industrial detergent that spilled into the Monongahela River in Western Pennsylvania a few days ago has now gone into the Allegheny River. The state Department of Environmental Protection also said Saturday that dead fish found Saturday morning in the Monongahela River at Roscoe were those killed by an earlier chemical leak upstream in Fayette County. Officials say the ethoxylated alcohol spill from the Allegheny Valley Joint Sewage Authority treatment plant in Harmar was reported Friday. Plant manager Rich Chiavetta says it occurred Thursday and about 10,000 gallons were released. The Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority says the drinking water supply was not affected. On Wednesday, the same chemical leaked from a containment pit in Newell into the Monongahela River.

About 300 dead fish were spotted in the Monongahela at Roscoe Saturday morning, but the fish appear to be the same ones that were killed Wednesday at Newell, according to DEP spokeswoman Katy Gresh. "This is a residual effect; these are the same fish, they were simply floated downstream," Gresh said Saturday evening, adding that boaters began alerting the DEP and the state Fish and Boat Comission Saturday.
