I recommend an 8 weight, 10 feet long.....I landed a 25lb king last year on the DSR using a 7 weight, 11 foot rod and it took me 20 minutes or so.....7 weight just doesn't have the backbone.....

Ill bet your 7 weight didnt have any backbone becouse its 11 feet long. I use a 9 foot 7 weight and its plenty fine for big kings, hoes and steel, just when I go down to lighter tippet you cant really pull hard on them.

    You mentioned steelhead.
If thats your interest 6-8 weight at least 9 feet long. Longer is usualy better since you can keep more line off the water giving better control of your drift be it C D swinging or swimming (my term for fishing a sunken fly like a greaseliner would) thru the holding water.
I'm 6'5" so The 9 footer is fine for me but you might be better served by a longer rod.
If kings are in the gameplan an 8 weight is a good allround choice.
Towards the heavier end I like for steel but enough to play a salmon in a reasonable time.
    A decent compromise.

You did say steelhead...I read the post too fast.....You want a 7 weight, 10 foot long.....Steelhead get leader shy so you might want to go lighter on your tippet. The longer rod protects those lighter tippets better....I use a 7 weight, 11 foot rod called a switch rod for steelhead....

That's a nice rod for the money, also I don't know Skip but but have heard all good comments on his work.
Next you need a good reel with a good waterproof drag system, our sponsers have Okoma large arbor reels that are a good reel for the money.

Been using 9 10 wt for years on Kings and a noodle on Steel. This winter started a 5 on Steel and it was great -rememer they a bit slower in the winter though.
Picked up an 11 ft 8 wt for all round use not long ago from Cabelas- nice deal with a large arbor and line too. ( if ya do it upgrade the reel cause the drag on the 'special one ' may have issues).
