Hazmat Called To Chemical Leak In Fayette CountyDEP: Chemical Is Toxic To Aquatic Life
Posted: 11:37 pm EDT August 31, 2011Updated: 12:06 am EDT September 1, 2011NEWELL TWP., Pa. -- Hazardous materials crews were called to Newell Township Wednesday for a chemical spill in the Mon River.The Department of Environmental Protection said 2,000 gallons of an alcohol-based water treatment chemical leaked from Henwil Corporation about 5:30 p.m.A large amount of the chemical was trapped in a containment pit, so it was unknown how many gallons went into the water, Katy Gresh of the DEP said.The chemical is biodegradable but is toxic to aquatic life.DEP crews have found 20 dead fish as of early Wednesday night.
