Newish to Southwestern PA

Evening all,

about a year ago I made a cross country move to the White Oak area. At the start of fishing season a friend of mine that's live out here a while took me along with some of his friends about an hr or so east for some good stream fishing for trout. I don't catch n release... I catch n grill.

Haven't been back out since, haven't had the time... Work's given me a week off w/o pay and I'd like to make the most of it! This time I'll be alone though, just me and a few beers with my pole.

I'm sure you guys get asked all the time, 'where's a good trout spot'... so I won't ask specifics...I'm not looking to invade someone's secret spot... but I'll ask which stream in the southern part of Allegheny, Washington, Westmoreland, or Fayette counties is good for some take home and grill trout?  I wouldn't mind going back to where we went in April... but the drive is a bit too far for just me to take.

Also, where is it 'ok' to park?  I've done some searching on the PA Fish website... stared at their maps, but that doesn't tell me if it is ok to park along someone's road (unsure if roads out this way are considered "private drives")

Anyone pull trout from the Youghiogheny near Cedar Creek Park in Westmoreland?

Any info is more than I know now!  thx all.

There's your answer. Wherever you went, go back there in April, when it's full of truck-fresh pelletheads.

Sorry... that was supposed to say I wouldn't want to go back to where we went. Too long of a drive & I really do not know that area.

I dont fish much for trout unless im using em for bait, but i imagine this time of year would be a little late in the game. Might wanna try the rivers for some eyes. Welcome to the site and just a fair warning...take some of the responses you may get with a grain of salt lol...some of the guys on this board like to be smart****e$ haha. Its all in good fun though. theres a lot of really helpful info here as well as some very good anglers.

The yough is probably your best bet, i dont fish it, but i do know it has alot of trout year round, most other places are either C&R or wild trout streams with sublegal trout, all the other places are more than likely fished out

can you fish right off the bike trail?  I've drove down to Cedar Creek park and found a pretty big parking lot where you can park and walk up the trail towards Mckeesport... Just don't know laws fully yet.

Would be cool to park and walk up the trail and out to the river to find some spots... just really unfamiliar with the fishing there.

still?  My experience has been they're gone as soon as the water gets warmer.  If they're there I'd like to know it since I live 5 minutes away.

Even in Connellsville up the trail to south connellsville. They stock nice Trout and the state always puts fingerlings in. Downstream all the way is great lots of local clubs stock and the state supplements fingerlings. And yes you can fish off the bike trail anywhere you please in the river as long as you don't go on private peoperty. If you're in the water wading they can't stop you.

Maybe I'll give that a shot then this week. Park at Cedar Creek park somewhere and walk up the trail to look for any decent spots.

    Thanks for the info.

The yough is a navigable waterway. That means you can pass through it and not be trespassing, where as with non-navigable waterways the land owner owns the stream bed and you are trespassing if you walk on it.

It's an interesting topic to some as the Donnie Beaver fiasco on the little Juniata brought it to the forefront a while back.

That's the law that's why they can't stop you! Most of the bike trail parallels the Yough and there a very few places that individuals own peoperty between the trail and the river, even so if you wade past their property alls they can legally to do is wave and go about their business.

Ya its not like that on creeks, i didnt realize that the yough was considered a navigable water way. people can own part of the creek and its can be illegal to walk in it, they can post it if they want

They usually only post it after the state stocks it.They should tell the state they are trespassing if they don't want it fished.Wouldn't that be ssomething?
